Lungs For Barbara

by holly on September 5, 2008

I received an email this morning about a woman named Barbara who needs help while waiting for a lung transplant. A few years ago, I lost a really special person, also named Barb, to a lung disorder so this story really hit home and I wanted to do something to help.

Barbara Beevers is a 70 year old woman from Corpus Christi, TX. She was recently approved for a lung transplant operation at Methodist Hospital in Houston, Texas. Due to the complexity of the operation, Methodist Hospital requires Barbara to be within 1 hour of the hospital when the donor lungs become available. After the operation, she will have to remain in Houston for at least 4-6 months so that she can be within immediate reach of the transplant team should a crisis arise.

While she has health insurance that covers the majority of expenses, Barbara must still maintain her apartment and utilities in Corpus Christi while she waits for a donor in Houston. In addition to that some of her anti-rejection drugs are not covered. The only income she has is from her Social Security Check.

One of the requirements for lung transplantation is showing financial security. The transplant team believes that if a recipient is focused on money worries they won’t focus on their recovery. And right now, Barbara has tremendous financial worries.

Barbara’s only living relative is her son Brent who is trying to help her raise money so she can concentrate on getting well. Their first fundraising effort is one I think our readers may be interested in. Especially since it comes with a FREEBIE!

Barbara was a stay at home mom and housewife for 33 years and she especially enjoyed cooking and collecting recipes.

MARTHA DOESN’T LIVE HERE “Living For Unpretentious People”
is a full-color, ad-free, professionally printed quarterly magazine published through Magcloud/Hewlett-Packard. It features some of Barbara’s most cherished family recipes, restaurant recipes, award winning 4-H/FHA recipes, recipes from family and friends, cooking tips, household tips, gardening tips, and even some tips for the guys in the household.

Thanks to the generous printing support of Magcloud/Hewlett-Packard, 100% of all proceeds (not just profits, but ALL the money raised) will go directly to Barbara to help with living and medicine expenses.

To read more about Barbara and to get a FREE down loadable preview of Martha Doesn’t Live Here visit http://www.lungsforbarbara.com/.

There you can make a donation, order the full version of the magazine for $16.90 which includes shipping or email Barbara directly with some words of encouragement.

Barbara needs to raise $5,000 in a short amount of time so anything you could do to help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for taking the time to read her story.
