Review & Giveaway: The Tale of Despereaux DVD & More!

When I think about rats, mice and other rodents, lovable isn’t a word that comes to mind.  But animated rodents certainly are lovable and I can think of many- Stuart Little, Ratatouille, Mickey Mouse, Fievel from An American Tail, Bernard and Miss Bianca from Rescuers Down Under, Tempelton in all his grumpiness from Charlotte’s Web and now Despereaux with his adorable over-sized ears.
Universal Studios is releasing The Tale of Despereaux on DVD April 7th. 
Here’s the synopsis from the press release: “Once upon a time… in the far away kingdom of Dor… lived a brave and virtuous mouse with comically oversized ears who dreamt of becoming a Knight.  Banished from his home for having such lofty ambitions, Despereaux sets off on an amazing adventure with his good-hearted rat friend, Roscuro, who leads him, at long last, on a very noble quest to rescue an endangered princess and save an entire kingdom from darkness.”  It is based on a best selling children’s book and features the talented voices of Matthew Broderick, Emma Watson, Dustin Hoffman, Sigourney Weaver, Kevin Kline, William H. Macy, Tracy Ullman and Stanley Tucci.  This movie has something for everyone- a hero for boys, a princess and a love story for girls, and like many animated films these days, humor that adults can appreciate.
The DVD is packed with bonus features including my favorite- “The Top 10 Uses for Over sized Ears”.  There is also an exclusive sneak peak of Curious George 2: Follow That Monkey, an interactive map of the Kingdom of Dor on which you can click and explore, and two games-one called Despereaux’s Quest and one called Build-a-Boldo.  You can also insert the disc into your DVD-ROM drive for a card creator, Fairy Tale Fantasy, coloring pages, wallpapers, screensavers, and printable activities.

The DVD has a suggested retail price of $29.98 and the Blu-ray $39.98.  It is currently available for pre-order on Amazon for $16.99 and $27.99 respectively.  Both qualify for free super-saver shipping.
