New on Juice Box Jungle: Is Shouting the New Spanking?

by holly on November 3, 2009

The New York Times says “shouting is the new spanking” and this title particularly intrigued me. Is it? Read the article by clicking on the appropriate frame in my JuiceBox on the sidebar, then read my take below…and comment! Tell me how you feel too! And don’t forget to answer the poll…have you ever spanked your kids?

Oh goodness….I confess. I’m a shouter. Just today in a rush to get my son to daycare and myself to work on time I yelled at him to “get in the car NOW!” as he ran across the wet grass away from the car. Then I looked around hoping my neighbors didn’t hear me. Yes, it makes me feel guilty. He’s only two years old. Make that terrible two. He has lots of ways to illicit yelling from me on a daily basis. Each night after the kids are in bed and the quiet of the night has settled over the house I pray to be a better mom, to stop yelling so much, to have patience. Being a mom is hard work!

After reading the article, it gave me more reason to try to control myself. Reasons I already knew. Yes, yelling will effect my children. Do I think that I am ruining them? No, but I know there are better ways to deal. Yelling doesn’t really help. My son doesn’t listen any better and it certainly doesn’t make me feel any better. It’s just hard to control. My mom was a yeller. I think I got it from her. In that sense, is this something I want to pass along to my own children? Of course the answer is no. Time for me to get it together before it’s too late.
What do you do to help curb an outburst? I need tips people! I think I am going to try deep breaths and counting to myself. I’ve heard that works. What works for you? Please share by leaving a comment!
