Today’s Tip from The Green Year: 365 Small Things You Can Do to Make a Big Difference: Pull weeds by hand.
“If you have a garden, you probably have weeds. Pulling them the old-fashioned way-by hand-does take more work, but it is much more environmentally friendly than dousing them with harsh chemicals. A hand trowel or small hoe might make the job easier.
Pull weeks when the ground is moist and spread a thin layer of mulch, which will shade the surface of the garden and prevent weeds from germinating. Be sure to add the weeds to your compost pile.”
Another solution that I’ve tried is using white vinegar in a spray bottle. It only works well when it’s hot and sunny. Just spray the weeds and the acidity along with the heat kills the weeds.
