Call me insensitive but when my kids get a little bump or tiny scratch I pretty much tell them to suck it up. I want them to be on the tough side and have the ability to handle little things that life throws their way. Don’t get me wrong though, when they do get a real boo-boo I’m always there with hugs and kisses and something that is sure to make them feel better whether it’s a Phineas & Ferb Band-Aid or a Mater Boo-Boo Buddy reusable ice pack.
I’m starting to notice as my kids get older, that the real accidents are becoming more frequent. The older and stronger my son gets, the more active he becomes. In the last couple of days we’ve had several head collisions (poor little sisters!). That’s when the reusable ice packs come in handy.
When we’ve run into some more serious injuries like the time my son split his chin open on our bamboo stairs we try to talk calmly and explain what we are doing to help and that it will make him feel better. If you over-react, so will they. I always try to downplay it a little and reassure my kids that they’ll be okay. Being silly helps stop the tears and bring a smile to their face. Character products help lighten the conversation — try asking what their favorite Disney character might do if they weren’t feeling well. If that fails, give them a snack like Go-gurt! Works nearly every time for me!
Even when the television is on, my kids are usually up playing with another toy or dancing/interacting with the show. I know that when they get older that won’t always be the case. What are some ways you inspire your growing kids to stay physically active, especially when the TV beckons?
