Our school supply list this year specifically requested Crayola brand crayons. I don’t blame them! Nothing compares to Crayola! Better yet, Crayola products are made right here in the USA so purchasing Crayola helps support our economy. There are very few items that are made in America that can be purchases for under $2 but Crayola’s regular sized crayons are one of them.
From the 8-count all the way up to the 120-count box, the company’s regular-sized crayons are all made in Easton, Pennsylvania. Crayola uses the finest pigments for color intensity, paraffin wax for smoothness and clay for strength. Twelve hundred employees help produce these high quality crayons which are used in classrooms and homes across the nation. Here are some amazing facts:
- Crayola makes 650 crayons per minute and up to 13.5 million crayons a day
- More than 400 different crayon colors are made, including favorites such as burnt sienna, carnation pink and midnight blue.
- On average, the company makes 3 billion crayons a year, enough to circle the world six times!
In 2010 Crayola, in an effort to shrink their carbon footprint, opened a solar farm in Forks Township, PA that provides enough power to make 1/3 of the 3 billion crayons and 500 million markers it makes each year.
There’s a lot of interesting background on Crayola starting way back in 1855. Check out the history of Crayola as well as a video from inside the factory so you can see how the crayons are made here.
