Skylanders Giants Review & Giveaway

by Holly Duce on January 18, 2013

I may not get the game but I totally understand the appeal.  I was a kids once.  A kid who really, really enjoyed video games and this one, from the sound of it, is completely rad.  My five year old agrees though I’m not sure “rad” was the word he used to describe it.  At any rate, there’s a reason why this game is so popular and it isn’t because it stinks.

Kids everywhere are enthralled with the latest Skylanders game: Skylanders Giants, the sequel to the immensely popular, #1 best-selling kids game of 2011 Skylanders Spyro’s Adventure. Unlike any other game on the market, Skylanders combines the real-world, virtual game worlds and online game play into one.  The starter pack comes with a copy of the game on your choice of format (PS3, Wii, or XBox), 3 Skylanders figures and a Portal of Power peripheral.  You can collect and play with the Skylanders figures with your friends, then use the Portal of Power to teleport the characters and play with them within the video game.  The characters are compatible with both games.  Each have their own personality, powers and ability and the kids can play the game time and time again with a different experience and outcome.  Each figure remembers shared experiences and leveled-up abilities allowing players to customize their characters as well as take them along to a friend’s Portal of Power for co-op play or arena battles.  Skylanders Giants introduces eight new figures that are more than double the size of the original and light up when they are on or near the Portal of Power.

Giants characters have special in-game benefits that the other characters don’t posses. Eight new regular sized characters have been introduced alongside the giants adding more fun and adventure to the Skylanders games.

My 9 and 10 year old nephews are huge Skylanders fans and have been showing my son Jackson the ropes.  We limit the time that video games are played and when time’s up it’s a very sad moment.  I get torn between trying to be a good parent and trying to keep my kids happy.  Can I declare video game day and let them have at it?  I had many of those days growing up and I turned out alright I think.  How do you handle screen time at your house?
