Valentines’s Day is coming up and what better way to spend it than showing your children how much you love them by cuddling up and reading stories together. These “love” themed books from Candlewick Press are perfect for the occasion and make great additions to your everyday library as well!
Huggy Kissy By Leslie Patricelli — This adorable board book for children ages 1-3 demonstrates how a family shows baby that they are loved. Mommy lifts baby uppy, Daddy kisses baby on the tummy and everyone wants to snuggle. What’s not to love about this cute book and it’s adorable illustrations?
Olive and the Big Secret By Tor Freeman — Find out what could happen if a secret is shared with a friend. This book can open up a dialog about secrets that are okay to keep and ones that perhaps an adult should know about. First, Molly shares a secret with Olive. She really wants to keep her promise not to tell but she just can’t contain herself so she tells Joe who tells Matt. Then Matt tells Lola. Oops — Lola is best friends with Molly so the secret is out and made it’s way back to the original source. Olive learns the hard way that keeping secrets isn’t easy, and telling them can make for a whole lot of trouble!
A Kiss Like This By Mary Murphy — A mouse kiss is quick and small while a fish kiss is fizzy and bubbly. The special split-page format of this book makes it more fun to read. Just turn each half page to see just what each special animal kiss looks like. The book’s cover and final page has a special sparkly heart that kids will love.
Love Waves By Rosemary Wells — This special book shows kids that love can be felt even when their loved one is away and demonstrates the emotional connection between parent and child.
Otter and Odder By James Howe and illustrated by Chris Raschka — In this unique book about an otter who falls in love with a fish, children can learn how great it can be follow your heart.
Bear in Love by Daniel Pinkwater — Bear finds a mysterious gift each morning when he wakes that makes him feel pretty special. He starts leaving gifts back and soon the mystery is revealed and a friendship is formed.
Of course my kids and I enjoyed each and every one of these books and it’s impossible to pick a favorite. Personally, I really enjoyed Otter and Odder because the story was very unique and I love the message behind the story. Love Waves is a great book for kids who may have a little separation anxiety or a loved one that isn’t always home. Leslie Patricelli books always have a special place in my heart — so simple yet so irresistibly cute!
