I’ve got a little girl with red hair, very fair skin and a sensitivity to many sunscreens, even botanical ones. I never know what will work and what won’t until I try it. I haven’t been able to pinpoint an ingredient that causes a reaction. While we live in the Seattle area which is known for it’s grey skies, sunscreen is still very much important to me and protecting my children. My kids do not go out to play in the yard without sun protection for more than a few minutes, even on overcast days. For my most sensitive child, I try to keep her skin covered as much as possible with clothing — not too hard to do this time of year while it’s still cool. Once it warms up though, try as I might, I cannot keep her covered or in the shade all day. Sunscreen is a must.
This week I put Babo Botanical’s new Clear Zinc Sunscreen SPF 30 to the test. When we’re lucky enough to see the sunshine, we don’t waste it! We’ve been out playing and working in the yard every chance we get and we’ve used this sunscreen on our faces. The non-greasy formula features zinc oxide as it’s active ingredient. Zinc oxide is considered the safest and most effective ingredient for sun protection. It is less likely to irritate the skin and more likely to block harmful UVB and UVA rays. Babo’s formulation contains 22.5% zinc oxide while the average zinc sunscreen contains only 3%. It’s designed to be gentle enough for kids yet strong enough for adults. Babo’s products are made from all organic botanicals and anti-inflammatory high quality ingredients produced on an all organic farm in upstate New York.
IN USE: This product, while “clear” actually starts out white but dissolves quickly. Unlike other botanical products I’ve tried in the past, this product has a pleasant scent which my daughter noticed right away. She said “Smells yummy, Mommy!” After several uses on all three of my children I’ve noticed no adverse effects. I think it’s a keeper though the real test will come when I have to slather it over most of their bodies.
The good news is that the product is hypo-allergenic, gluten-free, PABA free and paraben free so I don’t foresee any problems. It also contains certified organic green tea and rose hip, both antioxidants, and organic jojoba to protect the skin from toxic chemicals and sun damage. It retails for $18.95 and is also available in a Clear Zinc Sportstick for $12. For more information, visit www.babobotanicals.com.
