Marlise Karlin’s Story:

On the night my father put his fist through the only locked door in the house to punish me for not having obeyed him – I knew. I knew I had no choice but to go. I didn’t know where or even how – just that I had to go. I was 16 years old. I crept out my window and climbed down the big oak tree, believing, all those years ago, this was my only hope to find freedom.

Words can cause hurt that runs even deeper than burning wounds from a well-placed belt. And somewhere between the drinking, the whippings and the pain the words made as they chilled my heart, my search to find out who I was beyond what I’d been told – began. Although my journey lead to many professional and personal triumphs later in life, as a youth, it was filled with an inordinate amount of challenges – being a runaway, in drug rehab, a single mother, and taking jobs I don’t even want to speak of today.

On the morning of November 11th 2001 I awoke with a paralyzing sadness that seemed to penetrate every part of my mind and body. The thoughts I kept hearing in my head were… I’m not worthy of forgiveness… Ill never know the freedom I want… I’m not worthy… Everything I had wanted and dreamed of for so long, the freedom that no one can take from you, now seemed impossible. The hopelessness was overwhelming.

I was crying intensely, feeling the weight of the sadness in my heart. All that I had done to feel the pain of unworthiness was playing across the screen of my mind, causing my heartache to build even more. The drugs, the sexual escapades, the work I had taken when trying to support my son, the judgments I had of others, the cruel remarks I had made, the hatred I had carried of my father, not being the mother I had wanted to be… on and on.

I wanted to melt into the floor, just disappear, when a powerful energy began to course through my body. The sensation was different than anything I’d ever felt. In the midst of despair, suddenly I felt all that negativity… leaving me. It seemed to just walk right out the door.

Light began streaming in – to the room and into me. I could feel it in my eyes – it was as though I had suddenly been given a pair of glasses that allowed me to see what I couldn’t before. There was a luminous light surrounding everything. I experienced absolute peace beyond anything I’d known. It was like the boundless freedom an eagle must feel as he soars through the sky. There sensations of love streaming through my body felt silken water, as though I was swimming in a shimmering iridescent sea.

In that moment, I knew, I got everything I’d ever asked for.

In 2004, after a series of synchronistic events, I knew it was time to share what this experience had revealed to me, with the world.

About Marlise Karlin:

Marlise Karlin is an internationally renowned teacher and founder of  The Simplicity of Stillness a simple and unique method for connecting people to their own personal truth.

Marlise’s own journey was fueled by the limitations of her dramatic childhood circumstances – growing up with an alcoholic parent, becoming a teenage runaway, substance abuser and then a young single mother.

She later transformed herself into a successful entrepreneur and award-winning film producer.

In the midst of all her newfound success, a debilitating injury moved Marlise to once again delve into what she had always been searching for: a deeper understanding of the love and inner freedom that has existed throughout time.

In 2001, a series of profound experiences completely shifted Marlise’s perception of life forever.

After a period of integration, Marlise was then guided to start sharing this new method of teaching called The Simplicity of Stillness with the world.

The Simplicity of Stillness is a teaching method that contains elements that are both ‘practical’ and ‘profound’. The method can be used by people everywhere, regardless of culture, race or religion, to bring greater awareness into their daily lives.

The Method incorporates three unique tools: The 3 Breath AwarenessStillness Sessions and The Practices and has been designed to help people connect and align with their own personal truth.

The 3 Breath Awareness is a special tool that allows you to access that infinite well of peace, love and wisdom that exists inside of you… within moments.

Stillness Sessions offer people a uniquely different form of meditation where people discover how to release old patterns and experience the essential aspect of their human nature. This experiential form of teaching is designed to move people beyond the limitations of the mind and into their natural state of being.

The Sessions can be accompanied by music and words that are infused with the profound energy and vibration of Stillness. They are delivered in live events and are also available for purchase as CDs and MP3 Downloads.

The Practices are an applied form of teaching designed to help people practically integrate higher states of conscious into their daily lives.

Identified by SheKnows.com as an inner-peace expert, Marlise Karlin is also an ongoing contributor to The Huffington Post and Malika Chopra’s Intent.com Wellness blog.

Everyone in the family will enjoy Log Cabin, available in Original, Lite and Sugar Free varieties.  In 2009, Log Cabin announced the reformulation of its syrup line, by replacing High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) with natural sugar.

Did you know the brand was created in honor of a true American hero?  Minnesota grocer Patrick J. Towle introduced the brand in 1887, and named it in honor of his childhood hero and true American icon, President Abraham Lincoln.  For all of you history buffs, you know that President Lincoln grew up in a log cabin, deep in the woods of Kentucky – hence the brand name Log Cabin, chosen by Mr. Towle to honor Present Lincoln.

With a history like that, it is no surprise that Log Cabin continues to stand for the most authentic syrup, known for its unique maple taste.  There is a good chance our grandfather’s grandfather grew up using Log Cabin Syrup.  Each bottle contains the time-tested recipe developed to deliver that authentic maple taste unique to the Log Cabin brand.

Award-winning publisher The Secret Mountain will release Swing Café, a storybook-music CD featuring narration by Grammy-nominated and world-renowned Brazilian artist Bebel Gilberto and acclaimed Canadian actor David Francis. The narration is interspersed with classic recordings from jazz and swing legends including Ella Fitzgerald, Duke Ellington, Cab Calloway, Fats Waller, Lionel Hampton and more. Swing Café follows the release of several acclaimed Secret Mountain releases including Sunday in Kyoto and My Name Is Chicken Joe, which have earned praise from Publisher’s Weekly, The New York Times, AOL Kids, Associated Press, Scholastic Parent & Child and more.

Swing Café is written by Carl Norac, award-winning author of more than 40 children’s books, including the Publisher’s Weekly bestseller, I Love You So Much. It tells the story of Zaz, a little Brazilian cricket that dreams of singing in New York. After hopping a ride on a woman’s fruit hat that takes her from her homeland to Manhattan, she meets a savvy fly named Buster who brings her to the Swing Café on East 54th Street. Everyone there speaks a common language, called Swing, and Zaz is inspired to take to the stage, sing from the heart, and deliver the performance of a lifetime.

The storybook-music CD features vivid illustrations by Rebecca Dautremer, illustrator of The Secret Lives of Princesses and more than 30 other children’s books. This innovative packaging, combining a hardcover book with a CD, is ideal for young children.

Swing Café is also available in a basic CD-Digipak format with a printable PDF file of the illustrated book.

The Secret Mountain continues its award-winning series of children’s storybook-music CDs this October with the release of The Little Blue Doggy, which features songs by iconic Canadian composer and lyricist Lionel Daunais and performed by acclaimed singer-songwriters Michelle Campagne & Family.

Recently inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame, Lionel Daunais wrote the 13 songs that accompany The Little Blue Doggy. Recipient of numerous awards including the Canadian Music Council Medal and the posthumous Denise-Pelletier Award, Daunais’ songs are light-hearted and musically diverse, including, “Hopscotch Song,” “My Sister Is a Popsicle,” and “The Soles of My Brand New Shoes.” The title song tells the story of a little blue stuffed doggy who falls victim to famished mites after having been left at home alone. Upon his parent’s return, they discover his soggy red cotton tail on the floor and are faced with the challenge of putting him back together.

The storybook-music CD features vivid textural illustrations by award-winning children’s illustrator Marie Lafrance who has received critical acclaim for La Diablesse and the Baby (a Governor General’s Literary Award finalist), La fee des bonbons and Le Grand voyage de monsieur Caca.

The Little Blue Doggy is also available in a basic CD-Digipak format with a printable PDF file of the illustrated book.

Sir Dream A-Lot Review & Giveaway

by Amber on October 9, 2010

Dane Michael Glynn has the opportunity to do what he has always dreamed, release a CD of songs he loves and believes in.  That is exactly what he does on Sir Dream A-Lot, his debut five song CD. With a background in musical theater Dane has recorded five original songs that he discovered through his mentor and producer Denise Marsa of KeyMedia Group, whose label released the CD with Dane’s label DMG Records.

At 15, Dane has already enjoyed a professional television debut, appearing as a featured extra in June of 2009 in USA Network’s hit show Royal Pains. Whether appearing as a member of the company or in a leading role, Dane is in his element on the stage, and this new adventure as a recording artist presents Dane in a whole new light.

Marsa has a simple formula when working with new talent and was particularly careful when looking at songs for Dane; find and record relatable and relevant songs for new young artists written by veteran writers/artists. Marsa explains, “Dane is tall in stature and presence, and is very mature for his age.  His unique voice sets him apart from most of today’s young artists, so we needed to find distinct songs and create a personal sound and style for Dane, which we are calling organic pop. Whether the song was written this year, last year or ten years ago, Dane as a young artist related to these five songs and wanted to share their messages with others. That describes Dane as a person and as an artist; he is so very generous and wants everything he does to count.”

With rich and expressive vocals leading the way on Sir Dream A-Lot, one might think Dane was in his early twenties. The songs are about day dreaming and doing your own thing, about finding an ethereal escape when misunderstood, about one special person “getting you”, about how different big city life is and how it has the ability to draw different people together, and lastly a song about Earth and the environment.  That’s pretty solid content for a kid from Morristown, New Jersey half way to his sixteenth birthday.

The CD features songs written by Itaal Shur (co writer of Smooth, Rob Thomas and Santana’s Grammy award winning song), Anthony Krizan (Spin Doctors), and Holland’s Jaris Rasenberg. The title track, Sir Dream A-Lot was written by Marc Trachtenberg, the creator of Rock-a Baby a national rock and roll day school for toddlers and Jimmy Dyke, an international songwriter whose catalogue is handled by Warner/Chappell and Bug Music. Dane also recorded two of Marsa’s compositions after seeing them on YouTube. The record was recorded at both Marsa’s studio in Morristown, New Jersey, Tullen Sound Recording also in Morristown and at Andy Gabrys Music in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Canadian guitarist Gabrys was Marsa’s associate producer for the project.

Dane has had the opportunity to hone his craft at a number of performing arts schools in New Jersey, including Playwright’s Theater, All Children’s Theater, Worth-Tyrrell Studio of the Performing Arts, and Brightest Star School of Performing Arts.  On the heels of his early gymnastics training, Dane transitioned easily to studying dance in 2004.  He is currently studying voice with the respected John Hellyer of Linda Benanti Voice Studio.

Other notable career highlights include appearing in the role of Friedrich in the College of St. Elizabeth/Morris Theater Group’s Fall 2008/Winter 2009 production of The Sound of Music, and as both Captain Hook and Mr. Darling in the March 2009 Frelinghuysen Middle School production of Peter Pan.

When asked how Dane felt about transitioning from musical theater to pop, he replied, “Musical theatre has always been my main focus and passion, however I knew the chance to record my own pop record was an enormous opportunity.  It was a lot of hard work adapting my classically trained voice to a pop sound, but it all came together perfectly.  I knew I was in good hands, and the experience is something I will never forget.”

Dane understands the politics of show business as he has been a part of it since he was a child. He knows about all the hard work, the ups and down, the rejections, and the total wonderment after completing a performance. With much anticipation and expectations for the future, Dane is more than aware that being an indie artist is a long climb to the top, which is exactly where his eyes are focusing on. A climb he is extremely excited to start with the release of his debut CD Sir Dream A-Lot, and hey if Disney Records or Hollywood Records happens to hear the CD and wants to help his climb…that’s just fine with Dane.

Two readers will receive a free download of Dane’s EP Sir Dream A-Lot along with an autographed promo shot.  Also, be sure to check out all of our other giveaways HERE.

  • To keep your shoes lasting longer, rotate your shoes with another pair.
  • When you buy a new pair of shoes, protect them before you wear them for the first time.
  • If your shoes get wet, allow them to dry completely before wearing them again. Once your shoes have dried, waterproof them again with a multi-purpose protector.
  • Use a shoe horn to assist with putting on your shoes, to keep the heel from losing its shape.
  • When you travel, always place your shoes inside a shoe bag or wrap your shoes in a soft material.

“Passion for shoes,” that’s what KIWI is all about.

KIWI knows that shoes are a key part of personal grooming, and therefore a reflection of who we are to the outside world. They also understand that shoes can be expensive and that keeping them in good repair is a better means of extending the life of our favorite pair of shoes.

KIWI believes that not only do people love their shoes but also each pair provides us with a different way to express ourselves. Mommy Has a Tattoo Review & Giveaway

by Amber on October 3, 2010

Over the past decade, tattoos have become a widely accepted form of artistic expression for people from all walks of life. With the number of Americans inked, including millions of mommies and daddies, it’s amazing how under-valued tattooed parents were in children’s books and early education. In fact, there was no representation to be heard of until Phil Padwe published Mommy Has a Tattoo, with its message of validation and acceptance. Since its release, the groundbreaking storybook has acquired an impressive swell of readers, leading to Amazon selling out repeatedly. The story is about a little boy named James, who is afraid of his tattooed neighbor until he realizes his mother has a tattoo as well. In one afternoon, James learns that tattoos are not scary at all and his neighbor is really just a nice man with some colorful body art. A simple concept – but timely and relatable to kids everywhere.

The book emphasizes the importance of familiarizing children with tattoos at a young age and eliminates the common notion of “scary” that has sometimes been linked to tattoos.

In a recent book reading, Padwe shared his story with three classes of 2nd graders at PS 87, a Manhattan public school, and asked who in the group had a tattooed parent. In response, he noticed that nearly half of the students raised their hands… a number up significantly from readings he did just a few years ago. From New York to thousands of families nationwide, the storybook has become a favorite in the tattoo community.

Through friendly characters and positive explanations of body art, Mommy Has a Tattoo eliminates the negative notion that is sometimes associated with tattoos. More importantly, it’s a book with which today’s children will relate, raising their enjoyment of reading. Numerous five star ratings attest to the positive appraisal and the folks at Pricked magazine add, “This book belongs in the home of every tattooed family!”

After a decade in marketing, Phil Padwe has been working the nightshift at The Metropolitan Museum of Art as a security guard, which allows him to work on his art and children’s books during the days. He recently was interviewed for his work as a fine-artist by NPR, WNYC, and NYC Cable News after his painted portrait of Edgar Alan Poe appeared in the New York Times.

Combining a lifelong love of storytelling, illustration, and tattoos, Phil was born to write this book.  He has been collecting ink for over 20 years, and with two sleeves of his own, takes his mission of “Teaching Tattoo Tolerance” seriously.

Phil was born in the 70′s, educated in the 80′s, and spent much of the 1990′s in Marketing and Graphic Design.

A graduate of the writing program at SUNY Purchase (BA in Poetry, class of ’99), Phil currently lives and works in New York City as an artist and illustrator.

To view more of Phil’s work, check out his site HERE.

“First of all, there’s not really an “us.” The fact is… this is a one man operation! In keeping with the DIY (do it yourself) work ethic… I wrote a story… then illustrated it… then colored it… then did all the layout and design to make it an actual book… then handled the pre-press, printing, and sourcing chores… drove the truck when the books arrived… created this web site… it’s all done by hand. My name is Phil Padwe

Mommy Has a Tattoo has been translated and published overseas and is available in Germany, Switzerland, Austria, and The Netherlands, as “Mami Hat Ein Tattoo!” Here in the USA, the book has been carried by a diverse group of selective retailers… including Marc Jacobs (Little Marc Jacobs children’s boutique), The Philadelphia Maritime Museum, and Ricky’s NYC. It is more widely available at Amazon.com, and better booksellers. Over 3,000 copies have sold (and counting), making Mommy Has a Tattoo a best selling self-published children’s book!

A few years back, I began noticing a new breed of tattooed, down-to-earth parents. It was hard NOT to notice, because my best friends, coworkers and closest family members were among this group. Instead of being caught up in some “laser removal guilt trip,” I saw an entire generation of parents embracing their individuality! I’ve got sleeves myself, so it’s a bit of an understatement to say tattoos aren’t a big deal to me or most of my friends.

These days, as we all know, tattooed parents are highly visible just about everywhere. Except in children’s books! I couldn’t believe, when I went shopping on my lunch-break one day (for a baby-book for my tattooed buddy, who’d just had a son)… that there were no characters (and certainly no parents!) in children’s books, who had tattoos. Tattooed people simply weren’t represented, even though millions of American families have happily tattooed mommies and daddies! What’s up with that?

Were the big book publishers not showing tattooed people in their books because they hoped we’d all just quietly go away? Was there something wrong with having both tattoos AND children? In short, I saw the opportunity for a new kind of children’s book because I saw our generation producing a new kind of parent!

I wanted to make a book that kids would really, truly, love. It’s drawn in a fun, animated, colorful style… specifically for toddlers and little ones. I learned (and was encouraged) to draw, as a 4 or 5 year old, by copying Snoopy and Charlie Brown from the newspaper strips… circular, easy-to-draw characters comprised of simple shapes. So that’s the route I took, when it was time for illustrating this book. See my website for the type of drawing I typically do…

Also, “Mommy Has a Tattoo” had to be something that parents would be cool about giving, or receiving. Let’s face it… this is a baby-shower gift if ever there was one… so it was really important that this be fun, light-hearted… the kind of thing you’d want to give your friends. My goal, in short, was to make this positive for everyone involved. For mommies, and toddlers, and for the those of us who buy books for babies!

Share it with someone you love!”

Retails: $16.95
ISBN: 0-9770232-7-3

Plus, you can also order Mommy Has a Tattoo Coloring Book!  Millions of people have tattoos and millions more love them.  But how many have the opportunity to color in real tattoo designs?  This entertaining coloring book offers readers the chance to do just that.  It contains designs so realistic they might be seen in a tattoo shop.  That’s because every single page is based on real-life tattoos!  Created by artist and writer Phil Padwe, author of Mommy Has a Tattoo, this unique book is perfect for reference, practice, or just plain fun!  Great for kids and parents.

The Tattoo coloring book retails for $9.95.
