I brought back the 10 Minute Challenge for the New Year after a long hiatus.  Just like I used to, I started giving myself 10 minute challenges. I set my timer for 10 minutes and tackle a household chore while my children are having a snack or lunch. It’s amazing how much you can accomplish in only 10 minutes when you focus on the task. The 10 minute challenge is a weekly feature on Mommies with Cents. Each week, I will show you one of the things I was able to accomplish in 10 minutes. I encourage you to join me- it really easy amazing what you are able to achieve, even if it’s incremental, if you set your mind (and timer!) to it!

Do you have a space in your home that you wish was bigger? Someplace that needs more storage space?  Sometimes it helps to think outside of the box a little.  Take your closet for example.  Even if you don’t have a walk-in closet, you likely can add shelving above your hanger space if you don’t already have it.  Or you can add a second bar for hanging below the first to double your capacity.  Depending on the type of closet door you have, you can also had different types of hooks or organizers to increase your storage capabilities.Photo Mar 09, 11 31 13 PM

We have a walk-in closet with plenty of space, however, it could use some organizational help.  My scarves and belts were shoved into cubbies and draped messily over hangers.  I couldn’t find them easily when I wanted to wear them.  When I saw these hooks online at Kohls.com I thought they’d be perfect for our closet.  Originally, I thought they were 3 separate hooks which would have made them super versatile however these hooks are actually a single unit.  I bought two.  It took me about 10 minutes to install them.  They don’t come with hardware so I picked up some molly screws at Home Depot and used them to hang each unit.  Our closet has some really odd angles and there was really only one area that hand enough wall space to hang these.

Just looking at this picture, I think adding ledge shelves above each of the hook units would look really cute with a few little framed photos on them.  After I attached these to the wall, I hung my scarves up but left one of the units empty.  It didn’t take long for my hubby to take it over.  He started hanging his jacket there almost immediately!  I really like having the extra space to help unclutter the closet.  Now I get find my scarves without having to dig through everything and it really adds some style to our otherwise boring closet!

10 Minute Challenge: Battle of the Socks

Spring is just around the corner so it’s time to get organized.  The tasks I tackle are usually something that has been driving me nuts for a long time.  In this case, it’s my husband’s obsession for sock hoarding.  I don’t know why, but he has a hard time parting with his socks.  I’m embarrased to show this picture but I’m keeping it real. This is an actual photo of my husband’s side of the dresser.  The top drawer is supposed to be the sock drawer:IMG_6040

As you can see, the sock drawer is so full it won’t close and there are more socks on top of the dresser.  This has caused sort of a ripple effect and the other two drawers won’t close either because there’s too much stuff.  I finally decided once and for all to take care of this mess. Kohl’s is helping me get organized this spring with all sorts of awesome solutions. We have a walk-in closet with lots of shelving that isn’t being used to it’s full potential.  I bought a couple of these baskets with the intention of assigning one for black dress socks and one for white socks:Screen Shot 2014-03-03 at 10.14.59 AM

I under estimated my husband’s sock collection though.  While two baskets were able to hold the massive amount of socks, the white socks far outnumbered the black socks so I had to combine them.  Now if I could convince the hubs to just get RID of this over abundance we’d be in better shape.  Still, these baskets created a HUGE improvement.  Here’s the before and after photo of the closet:Photo Mar 03, 9 37 28 AM

The baskets fit perfectly on a middle shelf and with the wood handles are easy to slide in and out to grab the socks he needs. They’re really sturdy too with wire frames and polyester linen fabric. These shelves could benefit visually with additional baskets but for now, I’m satisfied with the end result, especially with the dresser.  Moving the socks opened up a full drawer in which I could organize and redistribute the contents of the other two drawers so that they can close properly and the top of the dresser is now clear.  Now we just need to take care of those cords and eventually get a new dresser that isn’t so ugly :)  Or at least center the one we have under the T.V.

I didn’t set a time for this project but I imagine it took 20-30 minutes because I had to refold all of the clothing from the dresser drawers and shelves.  Still, this small project had a big impact for little time and money.  The baskets were on sale for $19.99 each + I had a 15% off coupon and earned $10 in Kohl’s cash for every $50 I spent.  Currently, it’s not a Kohl’s Cash earning period but the baskets are on sale BOGO 1/2 off and if you text SAVE14 to KOHLS you’ll get 15% off your next online purchase.

Kohl’s provided me with gift cards to highlight their spring cleaning and organizational products.  Keep your eye out for my next post which will cover another area of my home that needed a little help in the organization department.
