I brought back the 10 Minute Challenge for the New Year after a long hiatus.  Just like I used to, I started giving myself 10 minute challenges. I set my timer for 10 minutes and tackle a household chore while my children are having a snack or lunch. It’s amazing how much you can accomplish in only 10 minutes when you focus on the task. The 10 minute challenge is a weekly feature on Mommies with Cents. Each week, I will show you one of the things I was able to accomplish in 10 minutes. I encourage you to join me- it really easy amazing what you are able to achieve, even if it’s incremental, if you set your mind (and timer!) to it!

Do you have a space in your home that you wish was bigger? Someplace that needs more storage space?  Sometimes it helps to think outside of the box a little.  Take your closet for example.  Even if you don’t have a walk-in closet, you likely can add shelving above your hanger space if you don’t already have it.  Or you can add a second bar for hanging below the first to double your capacity.  Depending on the type of closet door you have, you can also had different types of hooks or organizers to increase your storage capabilities.Photo Mar 09, 11 31 13 PM

We have a walk-in closet with plenty of space, however, it could use some organizational help.  My scarves and belts were shoved into cubbies and draped messily over hangers.  I couldn’t find them easily when I wanted to wear them.  When I saw these hooks online at Kohls.com I thought they’d be perfect for our closet.  Originally, I thought they were 3 separate hooks which would have made them super versatile however these hooks are actually a single unit.  I bought two.  It took me about 10 minutes to install them.  They don’t come with hardware so I picked up some molly screws at Home Depot and used them to hang each unit.  Our closet has some really odd angles and there was really only one area that hand enough wall space to hang these.

Photo Mar 09, 4 06 58 PM

Just looking at this picture, I think adding ledge shelves above each of the hook units would look really cute with a few little framed photos on them.  After I attached these to the wall, I hung my scarves up but left one of the units empty.  It didn’t take long for my hubby to take it over.  He started hanging his jacket there almost immediately!  I really like having the extra space to help unclutter the closet.  Now I get find my scarves without having to dig through everything and it really adds some style to our otherwise boring closet!

10 Minute Challenge: Battle of the Socks

Spring is just around the corner so it’s time to get organized.  The tasks I tackle are usually something that has been driving me nuts for a long time.  In this case, it’s my husband’s obsession for sock hoarding.  I don’t know why, but he has a hard time parting with his socks.  I’m embarrased to show this picture but I’m keeping it real. This is an actual photo of my husband’s side of the dresser.  The top drawer is supposed to be the sock drawer:IMG_6040

As you can see, the sock drawer is so full it won’t close and there are more socks on top of the dresser.  This has caused sort of a ripple effect and the other two drawers won’t close either because there’s too much stuff.  I finally decided once and for all to take care of this mess. Kohl’s is helping me get organized this spring with all sorts of awesome solutions. We have a walk-in closet with lots of shelving that isn’t being used to it’s full potential.  I bought a couple of these baskets with the intention of assigning one for black dress socks and one for white socks:Screen Shot 2014-03-03 at 10.14.59 AM

I under estimated my husband’s sock collection though.  While two baskets were able to hold the massive amount of socks, the white socks far outnumbered the black socks so I had to combine them.  Now if I could convince the hubs to just get RID of this over abundance we’d be in better shape.  Still, these baskets created a HUGE improvement.  Here’s the before and after photo of the closet:Photo Mar 03, 9 37 28 AM

The baskets fit perfectly on a middle shelf and with the wood handles are easy to slide in and out to grab the socks he needs. They’re really sturdy too with wire frames and polyester linen fabric. These shelves could benefit visually with additional baskets but for now, I’m satisfied with the end result, especially with the dresser.  Moving the socks opened up a full drawer in which I could organize and redistribute the contents of the other two drawers so that they can close properly and the top of the dresser is now clear.  Now we just need to take care of those cords and eventually get a new dresser that isn’t so ugly :)  Or at least center the one we have under the T.V.

Photo Mar 03, 2 01 44 PM

I didn’t set a time for this project but I imagine it took 20-30 minutes because I had to refold all of the clothing from the dresser drawers and shelves.  Still, this small project had a big impact for little time and money.  The baskets were on sale for $19.99 each + I had a 15% off coupon and earned $10 in Kohl’s cash for every $50 I spent.  Currently, it’s not a Kohl’s Cash earning period but the baskets are on sale BOGO 1/2 off and if you text SAVE14 to KOHLS you’ll get 15% off your next online purchase.

Kohl’s provided me with gift cards to highlight their spring cleaning and organizational products.  Keep your eye out for my next post which will cover another area of my home that needed a little help in the organization department.

I have been organizing my pantry but was really procrastinating finishing it up after my first 2 ten minute sessions.  There was a lot of junk left including 3 small boxes that never really got unpacked when we moved in last. I put it off for a week and promised to have it finished by today.  Guess what I was doing at 10:30 last night? Photo Jan 26, 10 19 19 PM

I wasn’t able to get a top to bottom picture so the top shelf and the floor can’t be seen in this photo.  I mostly keep baking supplies on this side of the pantry.  After the first 10 minutes, this is the progress I had made:Photo Jan 26, 10 32 24 PM

Doesn’t look like much.  I moved a lot of things around to better organize them but I clearly still had a lot of work to do.  I had hoped to get this done in 2 ten minute sessions back to back. 10 more minutes on the clock:

Photo Jan 26, 10 42 52 PM

Ahhh! Progress! It’s starting to look a lot better.  I had a ton of reusable shopping bags and plastic bags which I consolidated into two bags on the floor but I still had the dreaded boxes to go through.  Another 10 minutes on the clock:Photo Jan 26, 11 01 06 PM

I took a square photo on accident but all shelves are organized.  Once again, I’m sort of a no-frills kind of person so no pinterest worth pantry here and to many people this probably still looks a mess.  My point here is to just keep it real and show you that sometimes it just takes a little bit of motivation to get started and that you can accomplish a lot in a short amount of time when you JUST DO IT.  It took me 30 minutes to finish organizing this last set of shelves but do you know how good it felt when I was done?  I FINALLY finished up what I started over a year ago!  Ha, ha.  I can’t believe I was able to ignore those boxes for that long!  Most of the stuff went in the trash but I did find these little treasures :) Photo Jan 26, 10 53 07 PM

I also spent another 20 minutes or so sweeping and scrubbing the floor by hand.  If it wasn’t so late, I would have moved onto something else that needed cleaning.  Once I get going, I don’t want to stop.  It just takes a huge effort to get me off by booty in the first place!

I’d love to hear ways you manage your time at home with kids. Please share your tips with me and our other readers by leaving a comment, then come back next week for another 10 minute challenge!

This week I was supposed to finish up organizing my pantry however procrastinating got the best of me.  I’m really dreading that last shelf and I know I should just do it but instead, something else caught my eye and it wasn’t pretty…..

Photo Jan 16, 4 43 27 PM

Do you see what I see? A cobweb.  And there were many.  All over the house.  I kept seeing them when the light would hit them just right and I’d think “I need to get the duster out and get those things down!”  And as I usual, I’m distracted by other things (or little people) that need taking care of.  This week I couldn’t take it anymore.  I wanted those cobwebs GONE so I made it my 10 minute challenge.  The whole house was done well under 10 minutes.  It’s one of those things that makes you wonder why you didn’t just stop and take care of it a long time ago.  Like the pantry.  I swear I’m going to finish the pantry this week!

My pantry was gotten a little out of control.  It not only had messy, unorganized shelves but outdated items and a mess of other things that just didn’t belong in there.  It seemed like such a big daunting project that I had been avoiding it — for far too long.  Sometimes the only thing holding you back is a lack of motivation.  If you can just get the ball rolling you’ll find it wasn’t as bad as you head dreaded and you’ll feel so much better after the task is accomplished!  Commit yourself to 10 minutes.  Set your timer.  If the timer goes off and you’re not finished you’ll most likely discover that you WANT to keep going!

Here’s how things went down for me this week.  The first day at lunchtime I decided to start with the smallest wall of my pantry:

Photo Jan 06, 4 57 20 PM

I’m giving it to you straight.  I didn’t move anything before taking the picture.  Yes, there’s a plastic beach bucket in there and some art supplies, some random paper plates with dum-dum lollypops sitting on top them and some reusable shopping bags hanging from the wall obscuring part of the view of the shelves.  The box on the floor is one that I never completely unpacked from OVER A YEAR AGO.

After 10 minutes only briefly interrupted by my kids a few times, this is what I had accomplished:

Photo Jan 07, 12 40 11 PM

Now I’ll admit that I just moved the box over to the next section of the pantry, didn’t take care of the wire rack that isn’t assembled properly and the reusable bags are still a mess.  Plus, the art supplies are still where they were before.  But hey.  This is a work in progress, yo!  At this point I really wanted to keep going because I had only just gotten started but I had to clean up from lunch and get the girls down for their naps.  Then I had some other work to attend to.

It wasn’t until the next day that I got around to shelf #2.  Here’s the before:Photo Jan 09, 3 41 23 PM

Wait a minute!  How did the bucket get back in there?!  Those darn kids! My bananas are over-ripe (banana bread time!) and these shelves are over-run with Christmas candy and junk that just needs to be tossed.  10 more minutes on the clock and here are the results:

Photo Jan 09, 3 55 05 PM

Ok, once again I’m guilty of moving a few things over to the next section to deal with later.  And I just couldn’t let go of the Christmas candy yet.  Ugh.  Look how much stuff I got rid of though!  There’s so much more room on my shelves now!  Once again, I wanted to keep going but had other things to attend to and I still haven’t gone back to finish the last shelf.  It’s on the list for this week. It’s the worst shelf so I’m going to be sure to pencil in at least 20 minutes this time in case I need to go into “overtime”.

As you can see, I’m pretty simple. I don’t use fancy pantry organizers and it doesn’t look “pretty” but it still feels good to have it tidied up.  How’s your pantry looking? Could it use a 10 minute tidy?

I’d love to hear ways you manage your time at home with kids. Please share your tips with me and our other readers by leaving a comment, then come back next week for another 10 minute challenge!

I’m pretty sure everyone has a spot in their bedroom where clothing gets piled.  I’m not talking about dirty laundry.  Maybe you put on a shirt in the morning but change your mind about wearing it.  You take it off and throw it over the back of a chair.  Or on your stationary bike.  Or wherever is convenient at the time.  Things tend to gather there and you just keep ignoring it because who wants to spend time hanging things up and putting them away.  Ugh.  Well guess what?  It takes a lot less effort (and time!) than you probably think and your room will look so much better!

My problem area is actually in my bathroom:

Photo Jan 05, 4 06 18 PM

Jeans, sweaters, a jacket, even a dress is piled on this little half wall in our bathroom.  Every time I see it I think, “I should put that stuff away”.  But I don’t.  And then even more stuff gathers there.  Well today I set my time and tackled the job.  And guess what?  It only took 5 of the 10 minutes!Photo Jan 05, 4 13 07 PM

Bam!  Just like that!  Now I just have to stop myself from putting anything there because once I do, it accumulates!  Do you have a problem area like this in your home?

It’s been well over a year since I’ve done any 10 minute challenges.  With the New Year approaching I’ve been trying to get organized and think of ways to keep our home more manageable.  It reminded me that sometimes as little as 10 minutes can make a huge difference!

So just like I used to, I started giving myself 10 minute challenges. I set my timer for 10 minutes and tackle a household chore while my children are having a snack or lunch. It’s amazing how much you can accomplish in only 10 minutes when you focus on the task. The 10 minute challenge is a weekly feature on Mommies with Cents. For my 10 minute challenges I usually try to tackle something that has been bugging me for awhile.  This week it was my bathroom counter.  When we first moved into our new house about a year ago I was really good about keeping the counters clean.  I kept it up for quite awhile but recently I started slacking and things got a little out of hand.  I’m embarrassed to show you my “Before” picture but here it is:

Photo Dec 30, 9 05 21 AM

So much clutter!  It had seriously been bothering me for weeks.  I’m not sure why I didn’t take care of it sooner — what’s 10 minutes?  I feel so much better now!  I was able to put away (almost) everything and clean the counter, sink and mirror.  Speaking of the mirror, I can see my next task there —a half wall that has become a hanger for my clothes!  Time to set the timer again and get those things hung up and put away!  Here’s the pic of what I accomplished in just 10 minutes:Photo Dec 30, 9 22 08 AM

Savvy Sunday: 10 Minute Challenge Holiday Edition

by Holly Duce on November 6, 2011

I’ve started giving myself 10 minute challenges. I set my timer for 10 minutes and tackle a household chore while my children are having a snack or lunch. It’s amazing how much you can accomplish in only 10 minutes when you focus on the task.I encourage you to join me- it really easy amazing what you are able to achieve, even if it’s incremental, if you set your mind (and timer!) to it!

The holidays are such a busy time that even small household tasks can start to become overwhelming.  Little things add up and start to take over which can cause anxiety.  To help keep your to-do list under control, try giving yourself 10 minute challenges. Pick something off your list, set a timer for 10 minutes and dig in.  Focus on the task until the timer goes off.  You’ll be surprised at how much you can accomplish in this small chunk of time and it will likely inspire you to complete the task or move on to the next one even after the time has expired..  Sometimes the hardest part is just getting started.

The important thing is to keep a list of the things you’d like to accomplish.  When a few spare minutes present themselves, check your list and pick a task you’d most like to cross off.  Waiting for a pot of water to boil for dinner?  Put away a basket of laundry.  Are the kids occupied while having a snack?  Drag out a box of Christmas decorations and see how much you can get up.  Have 10 minutes to spare while waiting in the car for the kids to get out of school?  Address your Christmas cards.  Chipping away at your list will help you keep things in order and your sanity in tact.

Check out the other 10 Minute Challenges here.
