I used to keep my nails manicured at all times. I liked to experiment with combining different colors. Then I had babies and painted nails became a luxury. I didn’t have time to wait for the paint to dry, let alone the quiet time for the task. Now that I have two girls and my kids are getting a little older I’m excited to get back to it.
Who’s ready for some mom and daughter bonding time? Pop a chick flick (in our case, Rapunzel) in the DVD player and give each other manicures. The Essie Luxeffects collection is perfecting for dressing up the polishes you already have. These multi-dimensional top coats transform basic colors into dazzling and shimmering shades for a trendy and stunning effect. The following are the 5 different varieties as described by Essie:
As Gold As It Gets — gilded lame sparkles
Shine Of the Times — scintillating opalescence
Pure Pearlfection — decadent iridescence
Cut Above — shattered pink diamond glitz
Set In Stones — disco mirror ball chaos
Luxeffects textured top coats will add dazzle and fun to a girls night in. These nail polish top coats are sold individually for around $8 per bottle.

I really like using mineral makeup, not only for my eyes, but as a foundation. The best way I’ve found to apply it is with a Kabuki brush. The flat top style works best for applying it to my face. Before I tried it, I thought it would just cake it on. In fact, it does the opposite. I provides the perfect amount of coverage for a flawless finish.
Have a hot date for Valentine’s Day? The Limited Edition Beautiful Expressions Kabuki Set from EcoTools will help you achieve a flawless and glowing look from your cosmetic application so you can knock his socks off. This eco-friendly set of four makeup brushes features recycled aluminum handles and cruelty-free synthetic taklon bristles. Each brush is designed for it’s own task:
- Conceal: Round Kabuki — Use with liquid concealer or foundation for custom coverage
- Bronze : Angled Kabuki — Use to expertly apply bronzer and blend to create a natural looking glow
- Contour: Domed Kabuki — Enhance the fullest point of your cheeks by applying blush in an upward motion with this brush
- Buff : Flat Top Kabuki — Buff on powdered foundation, the smooth to remove excess for a flawless finish

Before I had kids I used to keep my nails painted at all times. I sort of let that go but a quick and easy beauty pick-me-up for moms really is a pretty coat of quick drying nail polish. The quick drying part is key, at least for me! Essie’s Fall Collection 2011 features colors inspired by clean lines, post-war styles and the colors of handbags. The classic shades have been reinvented for modern times. The collection includes 6 rich, seductive colors perfect for the season:
- Carry On- magnetic mulberry merlot
- Glamour Purse- almond blush
- Case Study- rich camel beige
- Power Clutch- enigmatic darkest green
- Very Structured- creamy burnt sienna
- Lady Like- pretty demure pink
Essie nail polish is high quality and always on-trend. It doesn’t contain formaldehyde, DBP or Toluene. The full fall collection retails for around $36 or $8 per bottle at Meijer Stores. Swipe on some color for a beauty boost!
My personal favorite colors are Carry On- a very pretty deep fall color, Lady Like which is a very subtle hint of color and Glamour Purse, an interesting mauve-ish brown. The color goes on really smooth and dries super quick. The darker colors can use two coats but with the fast drying time, there’s no waiting between coats. I love this stuff!
