I love adding new books to my kids library.  I’m not the only one.  They always get excited to have new books to read and look at.  Nosy Crow gave us a few that were perfect for us.  If you have a little boy, you’ll love Dinosaur Dig:

Almost without fail, preschoolers, especially boys, love dinosaurs and construction vehicles. Penny Dale combines the two in her new book,Dinosaur Dig.  Parents will appreciate the learning aspect of the book which helps children learn and count numbers 1 to 10.  The front inside cover of the book teaches dinosaur names while the back inside cover teaches kids the names of the heavy machinery featured in the book.  As for the story, it’s filled with noisy fun as the dinosaurs are build something really neat.  Find out what it is in the surprise ending in Dinosaur Dig.  This fun picture book from Nosy Crow retails for around $12 in hardcover.

I’ve got a one year old who needed some books of her own. Meet Noodle.  Noodle is a panda bear character who stars in two new board books for babies and toddlers from Nosy Crow.  The series of books by Marion Billet feature touch and feel details like a fluffy duck, cozy blanket and a bumpy ball for children to touch.  The rhyming text and bright, detailed pages give children plenty to explore.  Titles include:

  • Noodle Loves to Cuddle —  Noodle loves lots of things including his blankie and toys but he loves cuddling with Mommy best of all.
  • Noodle Loves Bedtime — Before light’s out Noodle follows a special bedtime routine: bath time, a drink of milk, and cuddling with a fluffy lamb.

These books are a perfect introduction to “reading” and offer a cool textile and sensory experience for little hands.  They retail for around $7 each.

sweet valley confidential

I grew up reading Sweet Valley High as I’m sure many of you did as well.  You’ll be happy to know that Sweet Valley High has returned!  Author and creator, Francine Pascal, has brought the identical twins Jessica and Elizabeth Wakefield back with Sweet Valley Confidential: Ten Years Later.  This time, they are all grown up dealing with love, careers, and sisterhood.  How nice it would be to live this dramatic yet beautiful life!

About the book and my thoughts:

Elizabeth heads to New York to become a serious reporter after being betrayed by her twin, Jessica, who remains in California.  Read what happened after the big falling out and will the twins ever resolve their conflict?  Elizabeth seems to have a hard time working towards forgiveness and is focused on revenge instead.  Each page kept me in suspense wondering what was going to happen next.  Unfortunately, it seems like the last of the series.  The book was a bit hard to follow as each section was written from a different person’s point of view.  I recommend catching up with Jessica and Elizabeth though to see what these two have been up to over the years!

Sweet Valley Confidential: Ten Years Later is only $13 on Amazon right now.

We are giving away a Sweet Valley Confidential: Ten Years Later book and tee.  Enter the giveaway by filling out the form below.  Also, be sure to check out all of our other giveaways.

Mitchell’s License Review & Giveaway

by holly on May 22, 2011

My kids always love reading new books, especially ones they can relate to.  My four year old son especially enjoyed Mitchell’s License by Hallie Durand and illustrated by Tony Fucile.  The story is about a little boy named Mitchell who got his driver’s license when he was three years, nine months and 5 days old.  It was a special driver’s license– for remote-control dads.  Mitchell never ever wanted to go to bed until he could drive there.  If your kids haven’t discovered yet, Dads are the best type of vehicle.  Mitchell checks his car’s tires (dad’s feet),  the engine (dad’s belly) and clean’s the cars windshield (dad’s glasses).  At first Mitchell isn’t the best driver and crashes his car right into the wall.  But Mitchell learns quickly to look both ways and beep the horn (dad’s nose).  Mitchell, being the good car owner that he is, makes sure that his car has oil (sippy cup of water right into dad’s mouth) but when he tries to fuel up his car with cookies and the car says “no” the hazard  lights go on and the car does an automatic u-turn taking Mitchell straight to bed.  The car puts the driver to bed where Mitchell drives off to find the gas station of his dreams.
While the story itself is super cute, it’s the illustrations that get the kids (and myself!) laughing.  I’d highly recommend this book to anyone with preschool aged children.  It’s adorable!

Klutz Guide To The Galaxy Giveaway

by holly on May 16, 2011

Are you familiar with Klutz books?  They are awesome and make excellent inexpensive gifts.  They are super fun because they aren’t just a book.  They come with cool things to make or do.  The Klutz Guide to the Galaxy was a hit with my 8 year old nephew  Here’s some information about it:

“When the scientists at Klutz Labs tackle outer space, questions like “where’s the Big Dipper?” are just the beginning. We also ponder important stuff like “How likely is it that a meteor will fall from the sky and squash me flat?” and “If I lived on Mercury, am I already old enough to drive?” and “Why do they call them MoonPies?” With The Klutz Guide to the Galaxy, you can explore the universe without leaving the comfort of your backyard. Assemble the included telescope to see the Moon’s top attractions. Flick on the red-lense flashlight — specially designed to keep your night vision intact — to consult the Tourist Map of the Moon and super-simple star charts. Tell time with a star, using the book’s built-in sundial. Or use the astrolab to figure out your latitude anywhere on Earth. And when someone asks what you did on your vacation, you can say, “Oh, I explored the edge of the Orion Arm of the Milky Way Galaxy.” (In other words, our solar system.) You sound outrageously intergalactic yet still totally truthful. Isn’t science great?”

The book retails for $19.99.  You can find out more information about the book and purchase it here.

We are giving away five copies of the book.  Enter the giveaway by filling out the form below.  Also, be sure to check out all of our other giveaways.

The Glory of Green by Judy Christie

by holly on April 26, 2011

The Glory of Green by Judy Christie is number 3 in the Green series (Gone to GreenGoodness Gracious Green). Green is a small town in Louisiana.  The story is based around Lois Barker, a newcomer to the town who has come to love it and it’s community.  She’s the owner of the small-town newspaper and has plans to wed Chris, a native of Green. Lois is surprised when Chris, a high school teacher and widow catches her off guard when he tells her that he wants to give his modest home to a Spanish family from church who need shelter.  Lois was left a house by her Aunt Helen which her and Chris plan on living in after their marriage but when a tornado hits during their wedding their lives are turned upside down and they are left homeless.  Instead of going on their honeymoon, they move into a hotel while they help the community rebuild not only the material things but the pieces of their hearts that have been broken by the destruction.  Lois leads her small town newspaper team to provide excellent coverage, help organize support and restore Green to the town she fell in love with.

It’s hard to resist the small town charm of the characters in the book and the relationships they have with each other.  Each chapter starts with a quote from The Green News-Item.  This is one I found particularly cute:  ” Summer Montgomery of the Ringgold community had an excellent performance at T-ball this week, according to her Mawmaw Evelyn. “She found seven four leaf clovers during one game,” Evelyn said. “Things like that do not happen everyday, and we think that the newspaper photographer should have come out here to get a picture.”  This correspondent reminds you we welcome reader snapshots as long as they aren’t too blurry.”

The Glory of Green is an inspirational, faith based book.  It includes discussion questions in the back, perfect for book groups.  The book retails for less than $10 on Amazon.com .

This is a sponsored post.  We were provided the book for our review and compensated for our time in writing it however, all opinions expressed are our own.  See Mommies With Cents disclosure policy for more details.

150 secrets to a happy wife

I know when I was growing up I would feel sorry for my dad at times.  He was the only man with a wife and two daughters.  Not to mention, we always had female animals (we always thought they had better tempers).  So, my dad was outnumbered many times!  Joe Gumm, former ESPN radio sportscaster and author of 150 Secrets to a Happy Wife, can relate as he has a wife and four daughters!

I will tell a story on my dad actually.  I remember he was acting up one night while we were at the movies.  Long story short, my mom left him and made him walk home!  Somewhere through the many miles he had to walk (it was a really long walk) and the rain that got him, he realized what he had done wrong and learned a few lessons of how to keep a happy wife himself.  The book, 150 Secrets to a Happy Wife, is along the same lines.  Through Joe’s humor, he describes how to keep a wife happy and maintaing a good relationship.

The book is actually great for both men and women.  It could be a great way to discuss issues with your spouse and ways in which to work some things out.

150 Secrets to a Happy Wife is about $10 on Amazon right now.  Check it out!

We are giving away one copy of 150 Secrets to a Happy Wife to one reader.  Enter the giveaway by filling out the form below.  Also, be sure to check out all of our other giveaways.

A Time to Heal Book #Review

by mindy on April 16, 2011

    a time to heal

I, admittedly, do not enjoy reading very much unless it is something that really catches my interest.  A Time to Heal by Barbara Cameron is a book that definitely kept me interested.  I don’t have much time to read with 3 children, so I took the opportunity to enjoy the book while I was on vacation last week.

With my husband in the military, I was able to relate to Chris Matlock as he was an ex-soldier trying to bury his past while creating a new future with new opportunities.  Having met Jenny Bontrager in a VA hospital years before, he remembered how beautiful she described where she lived.  So, he set out to see what her world was like.  Having arrived without notice, Chris quickly realized Jenny was married to Matthew.  This is only after meeting Matthew’s sister, Hannah, after catching her from falling in a barn.

A Time to Heal keeps the reader entertained by letting the reader question if Chris had different motives than just trying to find a nice place to live.  Matthew initially believed he was after Jenny.  Soon, Chris gained Matthew’s trust and realized he had good intentions.  As the story unfolds, Chris’ past starts to catch up with him as Malcolm Kraft (a man trying to get revenge on Chris) threatens Chris and Hannah.

All-in-all, A Time to Heal was a good read, but I felt the ending was lacking something.  It was almost as if Malcolm was thrown in at the last minute and was such a small portion of the book.  Chris’ past was probably really entertaining and a good read as he would have many stories to tell from being an ex-soldier.  I would have liked to read more on this.

I did like that the book included a glossary as the Amish have some of their own slang terms that can make it hard for the reader to understand.  I am also anxious to try the recipes in the back- especially the cinnamon rolls!  It also has a section in the book giving a clue of the next book in the Quilts of Lancaster County series.  Let’s just say it involves a baby and I have to say I look forward to reading the next installment.  Purchase the book for less than $10 on Amazon right now too!

Compensation was provided for this review, however, all opinions expressed are our own.  See Mommies With Cents disclosure policy for more details.

    beautiful blue eyes

I have hazel eyes (green and brown), but my husband has blue.  We always wondered what color of eyes our children would have because of this.  It turned out my daughter and my last son have blue eyes while my 2nd child has hazel eyes.  Marianne Richmond wrote a beautiful book, Beautiful Blue Eyes, telling children how special children are having blue eyes.

    “I watched, and I waited
as your eyes chose their hue,
    deciding in time
    on their beautiful blue.

    Blue as a butterfly
    or the sparkling sea.
    Blue as the bluebird
    who sings in her tree.”

My daughter is still a little young to understand the true meaning of this book, but it’s great that she understands she’s special (although all of my children know this).  I remember the anticipation of finding out what color my children’s eyes would be.  All of them started out blue and around 1 year is when my son’s changed to grey and then to hazel.

Beautiful Blue Eyes would make a great gift for any child or new/expecting parent.  It has such a great message.
