I have an 8 year old daughter that is very creative, has a thirst for knowledge yet hasn’t quite developed a love of reading yet. She prefers to write her own stories. I’m always looking for books that I think will appeal to her. HERO DOG! (Hilde Cracks the Case #1), the first book in a new series from Scholastic Branches by 10-year-old real-life reporter Hilde Lysiak really hit the mark.
About Hero Dog!
Ten-year-old crime reporter Hilde Lysiak is starring in her very own Branches early chapter book series — inspired by news stories Hilde wrote in real life! In this first book, there’s been a break-in on Orange Street! Cupcakes have been stolen, and soon a pie goes missing, too. Hilde and her sister/photographer, Izzy, must interview witnesses and follow the clues. Can Hilde crack the case in time to post her news story online? Joanne Lew-Vriethoff’s personality-filled illustrations appear on every page, bringing Hilde’s adventures to life for young readers.
I love how this book inspires my daughter. It really sparks her creative side while helping to develop her love of reading and building on her love of writing. I’ve already seen McKinley’s writing improving — she’s learning from Hilde the reporter, answering all the important investigative questions to build a case like who? what? when? where? and why?
This Guide to Growing Young Reporters is a great resource of involving your kids and encouraging them to try their hand and reporting and interviewing. It helps kids learn the difference between a fact and opinion, offers interviewing tips and a whole lot more. It is worth checking out!
The way the pages of this story are broken up with cool illustrations makes it really easy and fun to read. The fact that the book was written by a young author inspires my daughter and demonstrates what she is capable of doing herself.
Here’s a little more about the author:
Hilde Kate Lysiak is the reporter and publisher of the Orange Street News. Since starting her paper at the age of seven Hilde has written and published hundreds of stories in her hometown of Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania. Hilde has been recognized for her work in the New York Times, NBC Today Show, GMA, The Washington Post, and thousands of other media across the world.
I’m super excited that there are more books in this series because McKinley is totally digging this book and will definitely want to read more once she’s finished! I want her to know how fun reading can be and this series from Scholastic Branches is definitely helping!
