Holiday

Have you ever heard of HEXBUG Nano?  Normally packaged in a clear plastic test tube-like container, these little robotic bugs are designed to look and behave like a real bug.  An Easter edition was available complete with bunny ears and packaged in a plastic egg: The Nano uses vibration to propel itself along.  It runs, flips over and pops back onto it’s feet exploring it’s environment along the way.  You can register your Nano at the Hexbug website to track your Nano, play games with other collectors, download photos and learn more about robotic science.  Measuring approximately 1″ long, Nano bugs come in assorted colors for collectible fun.  They operate on a AG13 button cell battery which is included and replaceable for $3.

For more Hexbug Nano fun, a Habitat Sets can also be purchased separately.

I had the opportunity to have a HEXBUG Nano party so we hid the HEXBUG Nano eggs along with the other eggs at our family Easter gathering.  Once the egg hunt was over and a few candy wrappers tossed aside, the HEXBUGS became the hit of the party.  A little habitat was set up and the kids had a blast watching the bugs work their way around it.

My Sister-in-Law compared HEXBUGS to Zhu-Zhu pets.  Personally, I prefer HEXGUGS.  While not furry and cuddly, HEXBUGS don’t come with the danger of having your hair ripped out since they travel by vibration instead of wheels.  The pink bunny ears added the cute factor and there didn’t seem to be a gender factor– ALL of my nieces and nephews as well as my own kids had a great time playing with their HEXBUGS.

The normal retail price for a HEXBUG is around $10 which seems a little pricey in my opinion but if you can find a good sale on them, they make a really cool birthday gift, especially when paired with a habitat.

Ornaments with Love Review & Giveaway

by mindy on December 22, 2010

Each year, my husband and I get ourselves an ornament that represents us.  We also buy our kids each an ornament that reflects their life that year.  It has been a tradition since my husband and I got married.  We look forward to it every year and I hope that our kids look forward as they get older too.

This year, we got our ornament from Ornaments with Love. We chose the Personalized Sweet Peas Christmas Ornament.  I put both of our names on there and the year 2010.  The process to order was extremely easy.  This ornament is $14.95 and seemed high to me at first, but the fact that it’s personalized makes the price justifiable.

Ornaments with Love has SO many ornaments that it’s hard to choose from the selection.  They have Christmas Tree OrnamentsBaby Christmas OrnamentsWedding Christmas OrnamentsAngel Christmas OrnamentsFamily Christmas Ornaments and many more!

Porcelain Village House Review & Giveaway

by mindy on December 13, 2010

I always look forward to Christmas because I love the decorations. This year has been a bit different because my husband is gone. I’m not sure I would’ve decorated had it not been for my kids. I am so happy I did though since they are really enjoying the decorations. I always purchase new Christmas “gear” each year. This year, give CVS a shot for your holiday decorations. They have items like ornaments, figurines, village houses and Christmas LED Lights!

I really like the Merry Bright LED Lights ($19.99 for 150 ct at CVS, $19.97 for 100 at specialty store), but I guess I never noticed how “yellow” my other “white” lights are until I added the LED lights to the tree. They are definitely bright! I need many more sets so they all match. My children are loving the Resin Reindeer with Wreath ($2.99 or 2 for $5 at CVS, $24 at specialty store). They play with it and he keeps moving all around the house. My daughter automatically put the Rudolph Ornament ($4.99 at CVS, $16 at specialty store) on our tree while I displayed the Porcelain Village House ($2.99 or 2 for $5 at CVS, $9.95 at specialty store) on a table in our living room.

We are giving away 5 Porcelain Village Houses.  Enter the contest by filling the form out below.  Also, be sure to check out all of our other giveaways here.

Stay on Budget This Holiday With These Tips

by mindy on December 2, 2010

Tips For Staying On Track With Your Holiday Budget

The holiday shopping season is in full swing. The stores are full of Christmas music, shiny decorations, and bling of every kind at the endcaps….all with the goal of getting you to spend, spend, spend. It’s so easy to give into temptation! While I’m not perfect when resisting temptations (who is?) there are a few little tricks I use to keep myself on track with my budget:

Shop on a Full Stomach
I’ve noticed if I go shopping when I’m hungry I can be more easily swayed by budget temptations. At my SuperTarget, the smell of the Starbucks Coffee usually beckons me and if that doesn’t get me the freshly popped popcorn will. Anyway, I make sure to have a snack before I head out and hit the stores.

Leave the Kids at Home
Likewise, the kids are huge budget distractors! They usually do not accompany me when I am Christmas shopping unless I am shopping for Mr. Not Made of Money. Then we go with a list in hand, they help me hunt for the items on the list, and they know the budget amount we are aiming for.

Set A Christmas Budget Amount
We decide in advance how much money we are going to spend for the holiday season and then we stick to it. Part of this involves tracking our money as we spend it, so we know how much there is left.

Avoid The Credit Card Trap
I use my credit card but keep track of how much we’ve spent so I don’t go over budget. When the bill arrives, it is paid in full. If you don’t trust yourself to keep your credit card purchases in budget, then switch to cash. Don’t let yourself go into the new year with additional debt.

Book in Advance
We don’t usually travel far during the holidays but if we did we would book our reservations well in advance. Shop around online and compare airfares and hotel room fees.

Compile A List Of Prospective Gifts
I always go Christmas shopping with a list in hand…it gives me a sense of direction. Even if I don’t have a specific item on the list, I have people’s names and a budgeted amount listed.

Shop Online
Especially for the children’s gifts, I’ve found that I scored the best prices online this year. Nearly everything had free shipping because it was either a special being offered, or I searched for a promotional code before I purchased.

Plan for The Unexpected
Invariably, there is bound to be one or two gifts we neglected to purchase. I always make sure to have a few generic gifts on hand (homemade jar gifts, inexpensive kid’s game, etc.) to cover those last minute gifts.

What’s your strategy for staying on budget this Christmas?
