Spring has finally arrived. We survived winter and the worst of the cold and flu season but we aren’t out of the woods yet! With the kids in school, they are susceptible to all sorts of germs making it difficult to stay healthy and keep their immune systems strong. There are however some things we can do to increase their likelihood of staying healthy:
- Go to bed early — Studies have shown that sleep deprivation can lead to suppressed immune system function. During the school year our kids have a pretty strict 8 pm bedtime. They are allowed to read if they aren’t tired yet but they are almost always asleep by 9. I am a strong believer in the importance of sleep!
- Wash your hands often — I think we all know the importance of this tip but sometimes forget. Germs spread quickly by hands, especially with kids that have a habit of putting their fingers in their mouth. At the very least, hands should be washed after going to the bathroom and before eating.
- Avoid sugar — Apparently consuming sugar can suppress your immune system for hours after ingestion. This was news to me and something I really need to work on!
- Take a walk — Exercise provides a myriad of immune benefits, from flushing out bacteria to slowing the release of stress hormones. I used to have a pretty good walking routine and felt great. I’ve let that slip over the past few months and can feel the toll it’s taking on me! Time to change that!
