I don’t know who gets more excited when a new children’s book finds it’s way into our house- my two year old or myself! Candlewick Press has some new children’s books for spring and they sent me several to review.
I know the importance of reading to my children and I love that quality time spent snuggled up with some good books. Getting new ones, wether from the library or purchasing them, renews the excitement (Mommy sometimes gets bored reading the same books over and over again).
My personal favorite from the four we received is called Flip, Flap, Fly by Phyllis Root, illustrated by David Walker. I love the sing-song way it reads and the way it describes how different animals move. I like rhyming books because I think they are fun to read. This is one I could read over and over. The way it is written keeps kids guessing which animal will be on the next page making it an interactive read.
My almost two year old son’s favorite by far is Higher! Higher! written and
illustrated by Leslie Patricelli and I can understand why. While it’s a book of very few words, the illustrations are bright and help tell the story of a little girl’s imagination as her Daddy pushes her on the swing while she exclaims “Higher! Higher!” Along her journey she swings past a giraffe, tall buildings, all the way into outer space where she meets up with an alien. It’s a really cute book and I like how it encourages conversation with your little ones and inspires them to use their imagination.
The next book, Seymour and Henry, written and illustrated by Kim Lewis about two adventurous little duck brothers is cute and fun but what I like most about his book are the adorable illustrations. The mommy duck looks as if she is quilted!
Last but not least, Little Chick by Amy Hest and illustrated by Anita Jeram, contains several short stories about “a curious chick and a loving auntie who knows how to soften disappointments by keeping the spark of wonder alive.” This book has great yet subtle messages.
All of the books are hardcover with dust jackets- perfect for gift giving or adding to your library.
Three of our lucky readers will win a copy of Little Chick from Candlewick Press. Enter to win by filling out the entry form which will be revealed by clicking on the link below.
