I am in LOVE with Mommies with Cents! Mindy and Holly are absolutely amazing wonderful ladies that work so hard! I sometimes wonder if they may actually be superheroines, (Elastigirl and Wonder Woman come to mind) and Mommies with Cents is their cover story so not draw suspicion to themselves.
The Girls, as I call them, sent me an email with a potential product, HAPPYneuron, to look at for an upcoming Review and Giveaway. The email contained all sorts of interesting facts, for example, how the cost of brain decline is staggering to our society and has become a growing epidemic; leading a cognitively stimulating lifestyle has been clinically shown to defer brain decline; and a recent study in the New England Journal of Medicine concluded that subjects frequently participating in cognitive stimulating activities had a 63% lower risk of dementia/Alzheimer’s than less frequent participants.
I am *quite* forgetful and am always working at trying to improve my memory, so being able to try out a free month’s trial at HAPPYneuron was a wonderful opportunity for myself. I found the site to be very user friendly. There are gads of games to play that individually meet you at your level of game play. I chose the easiest settings for each game, and found them all challenging. They also have a very helpful tutorial for each game – great for people like me that like to toss the manual and just go for it. =)
HAPPYneuron brings you Brain Fitness through entertaining games that are fun and scientifically developed (and validated) to challenge your brain and keep it in top gear at all times. I thought this would be a great website to share with readers that like to keep their mind sharp, or for those that may think their noodle is a little on the dull side and need some stimulating challenging games to whip it into shape.
The study of the brain has been evolving for decades, and the rate of new studies and discoveries has been rapidly increasing. There has been more research studies performed in the past decade than in the prior fifty years, largely due to the amazing capability of brain imaging. A couple games and explanations:
- Split Words:
- What’s the game about?
- As quickly as possible form complete words by combining syllables from the game table. Target words are categorized into themes. You have a choice of working with two or three syllables/fragments.
- What cognitive functions are exercised?
- The brain area exercised in this game is primarily the left temporal lobe, which gets activated when information retrieval is called upon. This task helps you practice quickly retrieving words from your language repertoire. Each syllable can be seen as a phonetic cue that facilitates word retrieval.
- How can it benefit me?
- It’s party time and you look great. You sure wish you could keep up with the pace of the conversation and articulate yourself as well as others. Practicing your language skills is a key element in helping to improve retrieval of information within your memory. By reading language, producing language, and thinking about language, you can strengthen neural connections to specific sounds and this facilitates better retrieval of words in your brain.
- What’s the game about?
- Dance with the Fireflies
- What’s the game about?
- Have you ever seen fireflies in the moonlight? In this game you track and interpret complex patterns of movement as you watch and analyze five series of dancing fireflies.
- What cognitive functions are exercised?
- This exercise trains your visual attention and your working memory skills as you track the trajectory of moving objects while anticipating their direction. Concentrate on essential points (line intersections, width of trajectory, and so on) since they will help you rule out certain patterns and find the right ones. Your visual working memory will also help you keep each firefly’s course in mind.
- How can it benefit me?
- Training your attention and visual tracking skills will help you recognize faces and complex patterns more readily. Also, this game can help improve certain skills needed for daily activities such as driving, which requires you to pay attention to other vehicles and pedestrians.
