A couple of days before my son’s third birthday, one of the coolest things I’ve even gotten from Fed Ex arrived on our door step- an EcoAquarium and two live African Dwarf Frogs! (Note: I knew they were arriving and was prepared to rescue them from the porch right away) What a perfect birthday gift for a three year old little boy without any pets of his own! After he went to bed that evening, I set up the EcoAquarium. It was very simple. All you need is a gallon of spring water (you probably only need about half but it’s good to have on hand for when the water evaporates a little). Everything else is included in the kit- a live stock of bamboo, decorative rocks, “living gravel”, even frog food. The only thing not included which would have been helpful is a fish net to transfer the frogs from the bag they arrive in to their new home. You aren’t supposed to transfer any of the water from the bag to the aquarium and it’s hard to do without a net!
African Dwarf frogs are the perfect first pet for little ones. Very little maintenance is required. The water only needs to be changed every five or six months because the “living gravel” acts as a natural filtration system. And the cute little frogs only eat twice per week! Each frog gets two tiny little pellets two times a week which can be given through a little hole in the lid of the aquarium.
We surprised my son with the frogs at his birthday party which was green themed. Green is his favorite color and he specifically requested green cake with green frosting so we went with it. The frogs fit right in. At first he wasn’t really into them. He was too busy “partying”. But over the next few days he grew to love them. He named them Buzz and Woody after his favorite Toy Story characters and he loves to sit and watch them swim around.
Order the Jewel Starter Kit (retail price $39.99) which includes the same as above with a larger aquarium and take $10 off with code BLOGGER (case sensitive- offer good through July 31, 2010).

I like the fact that I can buy aquatic snails via mail order from Wild Creations.
I have to say when my brother was younger he would have gotten he butt whipped every few weeks with some of these remote control toys like the tarantula. When he was younger he put a fake rat outside the bathroom door and when my mother came out after a shower she screamed so loud. When she found out, oh boy, need I say more….lol
