Diaper Genie Baby Shower Cake: Practical & Fun Baby Shower Gift for Under $25!
As an experienced mom of three with numerous baby showers under my belt (both mine as well as friends and family) I have some tips to share on baby shower gifts. When your invitation arrives or when you first hear the news that a baby is on the way, your first instinct is probably to rush out and buy the most adorable baby clothes you can find. YOU and EVERYONE. ELSE. While this is a lot of fun for you, mommy-to-be may not have the same taste as you when it comes to baby clothing. My advice is to leave the clothing shopping to her and gift something practical. Believe me, it will be appreciated!
- Shop from a registry if you can
- Avoid clothing and blankets — these are the most common gifts and she’ll likely receive more than necessary from other people
- Diapers are always a great gift. Ask if there’s a preferred brand
- Ask friends or family members if they’d like to go in on a bigger ticket item (crib, stroller, carseat etc.) as a group gift. This can be a huge burden lifted for new families on a tight budget!
- Don’t be afraid to get creative. Just because you’re giving a practical gift doesn’t mean it has to be boring!
If you’re on a budget yourself, I’ve created a fun yet practical gift idea that you can pull together for around $25. You can get creative with the supplies but the base of the “cake” is a Diaper Genie 2-pack refill. Here’s what I purchased:
- Diaper Genie 2 -pack refill— $10 at Target
- Washcloth set (included small plush whale) $4.99
- Receiving blanket (whale print) —$6.99
- Blue tissue paper $1
- Blue metallic wrapping paper $1
- Curling ribbon (optional; pictured but not used)
You’ve probably seen “Diaper Cakes” before and if you have some wiggle room in your budget, you can add another layer to your “cake” by making a diaper cake base to make this gift even more practical! You can find directions for the diaper cake here. For this smaller gift we’ll start with the Diaper Genie refills as the base. They are available individually or in a box of 2 which happens to be the perfect size when stacked for this little project.
Stack 2 Diaper Genie refills together and wrap with your choice of paper, folding the ends into the middle to leave it open rather than close it off into a solid circle. You’ll want to leave it looking like a doughnut with a hole in the middle. This leaves space to hold the next layer of your “cake”. Since I was trying to stick to a theme, I broke my own rule and bought a baby blanket. Alternatives for this step are swaddle blankets (the type with velcro), a baby towel, burp cloths or anything that looks cute rolled up. The washcloths I bought are actually rolled up inside of the blanket to make it large enough to stick inside the middle of the Diaper Genie refill packs. You can roll up all sorts of little goodies inside the blanket — baby socks, pacifier clips, nursing pads, diaper cream, etc. I used the little plush whale toy that came with the washcloths as a cake topper.
I used tissue paper wrapped around the base the cut into strip sections to create a water effect for this whale themed “cake”. You can use ribbons, bows or other embellishments to achieve the look you’re going for. These make fun and adorable gifts and are also great for centerpieces at a baby shower. Best of all, they’re practical and affordable! Check this out:
Right now when you purchase 3 or more varieties of Diaper Genie at Target you can get a $25 Spa Finder Wellness gift card! Just save your Target receipt then visit and make sure you’ve followed these directions:

- You’ll receive a reply containing your Spafinder Wellness 365 code which you can redeem at www.spafinder.com/diapergenie
This offer is good through 7/31/14 and while supplies last. I received an email right away that my receipt submission had been received and was being processed. Less than an hour later I received the approval email with my redemption code.
I love this offer because moms deserve to be pampered yet often forget to treat themselves because they are so focused on preparing for the baby’s arrival. When I was pregnant with my second child, a friend of mine gave me a gift certificate for a prenatal massage. I’d never had a massage before and the gift was appreciated immensely! My back was always aching with the weight of carrying the baby. The gift gave time to just relax while all the tension in my body was eased away with the massage.
While baby showers are all about baby, they’re also a celebration of new motherhood and what better way to celebrate than to honor the new mom with a gift for a spa service! Diaper Genie refills for baby, spa treatment for mom — win/win!
What are your favorite practical baby shower gifts? I’d love to hear your ideas on what to give new moms to prepare them for the most rewarding job of their lives. Please leave a comment!
