Baby Magic Review & Giveaway

by holly on December 30, 2011

When putting together a gift for a baby shower I always like to include little, innovative items in a nice basket along with my tried-and-true favorites.  New products come out all of the time and it’s always fun to check them out.Baby Magic has recently come out with a few new products that are perfect additions to a baby shower gift basket or for your own family’s use.  Baby Magic’s products are paraben free and made in the USA with baby’s health and safety in mind.  New to their line up of infant care products are:

  • No-Rinse Wash— This foaming baby wash is formulated for baby’s sensitive skin and allows you to clean baby’s hair and skin without the use of water.  The perfect on-the-go solution is tear-free, hypoallergenic and dye-free.  Perfect for the diaper bag!
  • Gentle Eczema Balm — This baby balm stick is enriched with vitamins, aloe, oatmeal and shea butter to help soothe minor skin irritations including itching due to eczema.  The stick makes it easy to apply to problem areas such as the hands, feet and cheeks.
  • Kids Magic Bubble Bath — Add some fun to bath time with Kids Magic Bubble Bath. Available in two scents: Lavender and Bubble Gum.
  • Medicated Patty Cake — This cream to powder formula helps treat and prevent diaper rash.  The non-greasy, hypoallergenic formula has been dermatologist tested and contains no mineral oil or petrolatum.  The Patty Cake features mess-free application and is compact enough to fit in the diaper bag.

All of these items feature the Baby Magic Original Scent, with the exception of the Bubble Bath and Gentle Eczema Balm.  While the fragrance is pleasant, this is usually where I run into problems.  I tend to stay with fragrance-free products for my kids because they have extremely sensitive skin which I’m sometimes told comes along with having red hair.  I love the idea of the Eczema Balm in it’s handy little stick form and I’m glad they left the fragrance out of this as Eczema is a condition which can really be affected by it.  With the other products, the added fragrance is understandable.  My youngest, the only one without the red hair, hasn’t had any skin problems in her little over a year of life and the No-Rinse Wash is perfect for her messy little self.  It’s nice to be able to clean her up easily between baths.

The Patty Cake is an interesting approach to diaper-area care.  The compact states that there are over 250 applications yet it only comes with 10 applicators.  The applicators are just cotton rounds so it’s easy to buy additional replacements.  You can also just use your fingers. We rarely need a diaper treatment so it’s nice that this is compact to keep on hand just in case.

Vintage Couture Review & Giveaway

by holly on December 27, 2011

For the most part, I stick with the basics when clothing my three children — jeans, tees, hoodies, casual dresses/skirts & leggings.  I’m pretty boring because I usually even stick to solid colors a lot of the time so that I can mix and match.  I do, however like to add a couple of quality and fun outfits to their wardrobe.  That’s where Vintage Couture comes in.  They have the cutest clothing in super fun prints and the quality is unbeatable.

Vintage Couture was started by two moms who threw themselves into creating a successful business, and successful they are!  Vintage Couture is sold in Nordsrtom, Bloomingdales, Neiman Marcus and over 800 high end boutiques.  They have also opened their business up with opportunities for other moms by becoming a direct sales representative for Vintage Couture.  Here’s how it works…

“A Vintage Couture Direct Sales Representative partners with a Hostess to hold a Trunk Show. The Hostess simply invites a few of the girls over to her home and the Sales Rep does the rest. She brings the newest Vintage Couture Direct collections over to the Hostess’ home for an exclusive Trunk Show. The Hostess gets Vintage Couture Direct Bonus Rewards (otherwise known as FREE clothing) for opening her home and inviting her friends over. The Sales Rep gets paid commission and the girlfriends get to shop till they drop in the comfort of the Hostesses home. No malls. No parking lots. No strollers. No lines…

Becoming a sales representative for Vintage Couture Direct lets you earn the income you want with the flexible schedule you need. You can set your own goals and work your business from home part time or full time.

Enjoy a career that’s independent, flexible, FUN and unlimited in potential!”

  • Receive 20-25% commission on Trunk Show sales!
  • Earn free apparel, accessories and gifts!
  • Receive a 45% Representative discount!
  • Win bonuses and prizes with seasonal incentives.
  • Build a Sales Team and earn incremental commission on their sales!
  • Continue to receive commission throughout the season with additional online sales!

Find out more about becoming a Vintage Couture Representative here.

Even if you aren’t interested in a business opportunity or attending a trunk show, be sure to check out Vintage Couture.  We received the Trista Sutter Silver Bells Baby Set for our review (pictured above).  As always, the fabric is great quality. With it’s grape colored velvet and the silvery zebra stripes, this outfit is perfect not only for the holidays, but beyond.  It’s casual enough for everyday wear yet has just enough flair to make it great for fancier occasions as well.  The flower with a rhinestone center is detachable for washing and features a metal pin to attach it to the shirt as well as an alligator style clip so it can be worn in the hair.  Smaller, matching flowers, also with rhinestones adorn the flared bottom of the pant legs.

My favorite part about this outfit is the detachable flower.  I prefer to remove it from the shirt to use it in my daughter’s hair for a really complete, put-together look.  I love browsing the Vintage Couture collections each season — there are always a handful of outfits I fall in love with and even though most aren’t my style, this just proves that there is something for everyone.  I have never been disappointed with the quality of Vintage Couture.  In fact, I’m always blown away by the small details in design and how well the clothing washes up.  Since I have two daughters, it’s important that the clothes last so they can be handed down.  That’s never an issue with Vintage Couture.

Currently, select items are buy one get one free at Vintage Couture!  The sale lasts through the end of the year and shipping is free on orders of $50 or more.  What’s more, all profits from the Trista Sutter collection goes to benefit the JDRF Reasearch foundation for children with Diabetes.  Trista Sutter from ABC’s the Bachelorette is one of Vintage Couture’s designers.  Visit the website at www.vintagecoutureinc.com to see her creations and to check out the entire Fall/Winter Collection.

Flip to My Lou Review & Giveaway

by holly on December 21, 2011

I have to hand it to Flip to My Lou for taking a basic concept and creating something fun and unique.  Flip to my Lou flashcards for babies come with different themes such as ABC’s, animals and insects, girly cards, and more. You can also add individual cards to customize your own set.  We love the stocking stuffer set that we received to review.  It features a wide variety of pictures from common (a tiger, guitar and sun) to unusual (a picture of Elvis, an alien, and beakers).  The laminated cards which are easy to wipe off, are double sided and attached to a plastic ring that can be clipped to a diaper bag or stroller.

As you can see from the picture, my one year old enjoys her new set of Flip to My Lou cards.  She’ll sit and flip through them on her own but she really loves when we look at them together and I tell her the words or sounds that go along with each image.  This toy is excellent for traveling whether is just for a stroll through the mall or a plane ride around the country.  The clip keeps them where you need them and the toy itself keeps kids engaged.  Flip to My Lou cards would make a fun stocking stuffer or baby shower gift and it’s something I’d definitely recommend to friends.

Feeling lucky?  Enter to win a Flip to My Lou Stocking Stuffer set + 4 custom images of your choice (2 extra double sided cards). Winner can choose from any of Flip to My Lou’s images or choose the baby and add any name they’d like.

Glowberry Bears Review & Giveaway

by holly on November 28, 2011

Brainy Baby is known for their educational DVDs but they also have a decent sized selection of other items including toys, books, flash cards and more.  One of the latest additions to the Brainy Baby line of products are two interactive plush teddy bears. Meet Twinkleton. He’s a friendly face to comfort your child at bedtime and a playful pal for daytime fun. This cuddly little guy can interact with you in bear-to-child mode.  Say goodnight to him and he’ll respond “Night-night” with a yawn.  He can also interact with his friend, a yellow bear named Summer Lightly in bear-to-bear mode with conversations such as “Hi, I’m Twinkleton.  What’s your name?” which receives this response from Summer Lightly: “I’m Summer Lightly.  Let’s be friends!”  Interaction is initiated with the squeeze of the left paw.  The right paw activates a nightlight which makes the bear’s tummy glow.  It turns off automatically after three minutes of inactivity.  Glowberry Bears are ticklish. Touch their tummies and they giggle.  These lovable toys made by Brainy Baby retail for $24.99 each but right now they are only $12.99 each.  Plus through the end of the year you can use this exclusive code to save an additional 25%: cents25.

See the little guys in action in the short video below:

Bright Start Giggables Review

by holly on November 26, 2011

So, it’s baby’s first Christmas and while they’ll never remember what fills their stocking this year, it’s still fun to get them a few items.  Start with little snacks like yogurt melts, goldfish crackers and Cheerios then add some toys. Bright Starts has a great line of toys perfect for stuffing baby’s stocking with this holiday season.  Instead of going crazy with large gifts, focus on toys that baby can play with on a daily basis that fit right into their tiny little hands.  Any toy that they can clutch is great for up-close play and discovery.  Here are a few fun ones that your little one is sure to love:

  • Giggables— These 4″ ball characters giggle and make silly sounds to entertain your baby or toddler.  They wobble and roll when pushed along.  Available in 6 different characters including a frog, duck, and pig, these toys are each sold separately for around $10 each.
  • Click & Giggle Remote — Babies will love pressing the buttons to activate over 25 songs, numbers and television sounds.  The remote lights up when the buttons are pressed.  A spinning roller ball with character images inside adds more for baby to explore.  It retails for around $10
  • Dancing Friends Teether—These soft teethers rattle and are BPA free for safety.  Help baby break those first teeth through!

Make baby’s first Christmas as fun as possible with age-appropriate toys from Bright Starts!

A complimentary product/service was provided for this review, however, all opinions expressed are my own.  I was not compensated in any other way.  See Mommies With Cents disclosure policy for more details.

Kiki’s Fashions

by Rachel on November 13, 2011

Before you are pregnant, seeing adorable and well dressed women walk around town with their cute little baby bumps makes it seem like pregnancy will be the best-dressed time of your life – then you actually SHOP for maternity clothes and reality sets in! Unless it’s overwhelmingly expensive, maternity wear tends to be drab and shapeless, dowdy lifeless pieces that are definitely chosen for ease of manufacturing – because it’s certainly not fashion.

Kiki’s Fashions is working to change all that, by offering cheap maternity clothes that you actually want to wear! Tee-shirts and tank tops, dresses, pants, and skirts – everything you need is available at reasonable prices.

Kiki’s sent me their Knit Maternity Cardigan to try out, and I love how soft it is. The quality is more than you might expect for the price, and the style is perfect for this fall’s trends. It fits slightly smaller than other brands, so you may want to consider sizing up.

Trendy Maternity Clothes are not easy to find – but Kiki’s Fashions has a wide variety of styles and colors to help you stay on trend, whatever your style is.

Want to try a Kiki’s item for yourself? Make sure to enter the giveaway below for a chance to win a shirt or dress of your choice! Also, don’t forget to Follow them on Facebook for access to special deals and giveaways!

Shopping for maternity clothes doesn’t have to be a nightmare, or even a chore. You shouldn’t have to feel guilty about wanting to look nice because it’s too much to spend on items you’ll only wear for a few months – go to Kiki’s and grab some fun pieces for a maternity wardrobe that makes you look radiant and beautiful. Enjoy this time in your life – it goes by faster than you can imagine!

More Business of Being Born Released Today!

by Rachel on November 8, 2011

When I was pregnant with my first child, in 1999, I was young and relatively naive about childbirth. I’m not sure what led me towards a midwife – it may have been my mom’s serious hippie tendencies, or the stories of my sister’s midwife-attended births – but I knew right away that the Midwife Model of Care was what I wanted, although I didn’t know that was what it was called. Now, nearly 12 year later and pregnant with my third child I am eternally grateful for the care I received then and for the work that was put in to help me accomplish a vaginal delivery, despite a stubbornly sunny-side up baby.

When pregnant with my middle child three years ago I watched the documentary “The Business of Being Born”, in which Executive Producer Ricki Lake and Filmmaker Abby Epstein sought to bring to light some of the aspects of childbirth that are treated as anything but the miracle it should be. The fact is that medical practices, whether For- or Non-Profit, are businesses, and sometimes decisions that should be made based on the individual needs of a mother and her baby are instead about convenience, consistency, or the bottom line. If you haven’t seen this film, I highly recommend it – no matter what stage of mommy hood you might be in.

Today Ricki and Abby are releasing their long-awaited follow up films in “More Business of Being Born”. The series starts with a trip to The Farm, an amazing birth community where Ina May Gaskin and her team of colleagues help mothers experience amazing births in the quiet of rural Tennessee. Ina May’s success with natural birth (1.4% C-Section rate between 1970 and 2000) and her work to educate mothers and birth professionals have made her almost a celebrity. (I also highly recommend any of Ina May’s books!) She is so well respected that Ina May is the only Midwife to ever have an Obstetrical maneuver named after her.

The films continue with frank and open discussions about birth with celebrity mothers, over an hour and a half discussing the care options women have available to them, including Doulas, Midwives, C-Sections, and Birth Centers, and then some time with the subject of VBAC, and why delivering vaginally after a c-section is such a controversial topic in healthcare today. Here is what the producers have to say about the films:

Down on The Farm: Conversations with Legendary Midwife Ina May Gaskin

Follow Executive Producer Ricki Lake and Director Abby Epstein to The Farm Community in Summertown, Tennessee, where pioneer midwife Ina May Gaskin talks candidly about the latest birth trends and the art of midwifery. Gaskin, who was featured in the original The Business of Being Born, sparked Lake’s initial interest in natural birth and has continued to inspire the filmmaking duo’s advocacy efforts. Also on the journey is pregnant actress Kimberly Williams-Paisley, who has enlisted a midwife to attend the birth of her second child and joins the filmmakers in meeting The Farm’s famous midwives and touring the picturesque birth cabins in the woods. In the poignant final sequence, Gaskin exhibits her Safe Motherhood Quilt and calls for a deeper examination into the rising maternal mortality rate in the US.  (Running Time: 55 min)

Special Deliveries: Celebrity Mothers Talk Straight on Birth

Featuring celebrity moms Laila Ali, Gisele Bundchen, Cindy Crawford, Alyson Hannigan, Melissa Joan Hart, Kellie Martin, Alanis Morissette, Christy Turlington-Burns and Kimberly Williams-Paisley, Special Deliveries is a collection of intimate birth stories from a diverse group of mothers. Whether they chose to deliver at a hospital, home or birthing center, these heartfelt and humorous testimonies speak to the lasting power of the birth experience.  True inspiration for any mother-to-be, this group of women trusted their bodies and intuitions, taking responsibility for their birth decisions even when things didn’t go according to plan. None of these courageous women has ever spoken on the record in such compelling detail, and, on this DVD, the filmmakers weave together their passionate narratives as a celebration of the journey to motherhood that will leave viewers with a renewed sense of amazement about the power of women.  (Running Time: 74 min)

Explore Your Options: Doulas, Birth Centers & C-Sections

The most comprehensive and educational DVD in the series, Explore Your Options offers birth-planning guidance around key topics such as the role of doulas (labor support specialists,) the advantages of birth centers and the alarming escalation of cesarean sections in the United States and Brazil. Epstein and Lake talk to doulas about why their profession is currently booming and uncover why having a good doula can make-or-break the entire birth experience. They look at the ever-growing rates of inductions and c-sections, which have reached 50% in many US hospitals and more than 99% in some private hospitals in Brazil. How “safe” are these cesarean surgeries, and what are the health implications for the mothers and babies? Explore Your Options examines the pros and cons of birth centers, described as a perfect middle ground between home and hospital. Special features include Alanis Morissette and Alyson Hannigan on the advantages of doulas, Christy Turlington Burns on her unexpected complications at a birth center, Molly Ringwald on how she avoided a cesarean birth with her twins and  Gisele Bundchen and Michelle Alves on the cesarean epidemic in their native Brazil. (Running Time: 102 min)

The VBAC Dilemma: What Your Options Really Are

The VBAC (Vaginal Birth After Cesarean) has become a hot-button issue in the modern maternity care system, as one in three new mothers will give birth via cesarean section. Are all of these mothers then forced to undergo a repeat cesarean the next time around? Epstein and Lake posed that question to dozens of experts, determining the surprising truth about VBACs. They also follow several women’s stories – both those who succeed and fail at attempting a VBAC – including that of filmmaker Abby Epstein, whose first c-section delivery was depicted in the dramatic, final moments of The Business of Being Born. (Running Time: 51 min)

Watch the Trailer for More Business of Being Born Here

Since the birth of my son I have trained to become a Doula, and I consider myself an advocate for women during the childbearing years. Notice I didn’t say “for natural childbirth”, or “for homebirth”. I strongly believe that every woman should be able to deliver their baby how they choose – and that women deserve to have all the information they need to make those decisions. I’m grateful for Ricki Lake and her team for bringing this information to families, and I think that any woman would be well served to watch these films and learn everything she can from them.

For more information, visit thebusinessofbeingborn.com. You may purchase hard copies of the DVDs there (in great packages!) or purchase an electronic copy for instant download. You do not want to miss these movies!
