In this weeks installment of our Commit to Go Green in 2009 series we are going to focus on energy conservation. We all know that turning of lights, electronic devices etc. when we are not using them help conserve energy. Here are some other ways to conserve energy and save money in the process:
Get a programmable thermostat
: Lowering your thermostat saves a lot of energy, not to mention lowers your heating bill. A programmable thermostat is especially effective if your family has a routine schedule. Lower the thermostat while you are away from home and while you are sleeping. The same goes for A/C if you use it in the summer. The last thing I remember to do before heading out the door or going to bed is to lower the thermostat so it’s nice to program it and forget about it!
Monitor Your Electricity Usage: Find more ways to save by using an
Electricity Usage Monitor
. It shows the operating costs of your household appliances and calculates the costs by week, month or year alerting you to your household energy zappers.
Use Timers and Power Down: Use timing devices to help you power down devices when you don’t need them running. This Surge Protector
has 8 outlets and a day/night timer to power down everything plugged into it at a set time everyday. This surge protector
powers down your devices automatically when they aren’t in use. This standby system
is one more way to help conserve energy to anything plugged in to an electrical outlet.
If you have any tried and true ways to conserve energy in your home, we’d love to hear them! Please share them with us by leaving a comment.

Slather your hands with your favorite lotion, put on your rubber gloves and get to work! Not only will your hands and nails be protected but they will come out soft and moisturized as if you just had a parafin dip manicure! Who says spa treatments and housework can’t go “hand in hand”?

The Mr. Clean Magic Eraser isn’t exactly magic but it does do a pretty good job on certain jobs. The Magic Eraser is sort of like a sponge. It’s white and rectangular shaped. It does not contain any cleaning solution nor does it need any for it to work. To use just get it wet and squeeze the water out. As you use the eraser, over time it will get smaller and pieces will start to come off- just like a rubber pencil eraser.
If the floor of your bathtub is textured you know how hard it is to get clean. The Magic Eraser won’t magically clean your bathtub but with a little elbow grease this cleaning tool CAN erase the soap scum and dirt from all of the crevices. It’s the best tool I have found for this job.
The magic eraser is also great for cleaning scuff marks off of walls and floors- it literally erases them away. It’s great for refrigerator and dishwasher doors too. A friend tells me that the eraser also works well on shining up sink and bathtub faucets (thanks, Melissa!)
One day I decided to try the Magic Eraser on my counter top next to the stove. I was shocked (and disgusted!) by what came off a counter that looked clean to me!
I make sure to keep a Magic Eraser on hand at all times. You never know when it might come in handy. I keep finding new ways to use it. How do YOU use your Magic Eraser? In case you missed them, find more green cleaning tips HERE.

White vinegar can be used to replace fabric softener and works quite well. It’s environmentally friendly because it doesn’t contain chemicals and you can buy it in bulk to save on packaging. Use 1/2 cup vinegar in the wash cycle but be sure not to use bleach at the same time as mixing the two may create toxic fumes. Don’t worry, your clothing will not come out smelling like vinegar. The smell disappears completely once clothes are dry. For more money saving green cleaning tips click HERE.
