There’s not a lot we can do about ripped knees in our kiddos jeans but there are ways we can make our family’s clothing last a little longer.  As a family of 5, we do what we can to stretch our clothing budget.  Here are some tips that our family does to try to extend the life of our clothes:

• If you can afford a front loading washing machine, I highly recommend it.  It’s much gentler on clothes because the agitation process is different and less abrasive
• Always zip zippers, close snaps and cover/close Velcro.  Leaving them open allows them to rub against fabrics, snagging them, fraying them or speeding up pilling.
• Use a stain treater immediately.  Chances are much higher of removal if you tend to the stain before it sets in.
• Buy up a size.  For my kids, I try to buy their clothing slightly bigger.  I don’t want them swimming in their clothing but they grow so fast you’ll get more wear out of shirts and pants if they can wear them a little big in the beginning.
• Use a quality laundry products
• Don’t throw out the pants with holes!  Have your child wear them as “play clothes”.  I also use leggings or athletic pants as pajama pants when they get holes in them.
