My kids can hardly wait until dark every day. We gave my 5 year old daughter, McKinley, a Les Petit Merveilles Shadow Puppet Set for Valentine’s Day and all 3 of my kids have been enjoying playing with it together. Darkness, a flashlight, a set of Moulin Roty Nighttime Shadow puppets and your imagination are all you need to set the scene for creative storytelling. These laser cut shapes are attached to wooden dowels and are used to cast intricate shadows onto a wall or other surface. Bedtime stories have never been so much fun! The Les Petit Merveilles line of shadow puppets includes several sets:
- Nighttime Castle Shadows — This set comes with 9 shapes including a princess, fairy godmother, castle, dragon, witch & more!
- Nighttime Dinosaur Shadows — This set includes 8 dinosaurs plus tree and volcano scenery
- Nighttime Circus Shadows — This 11 piece set includes everything you need to put on a circus show, shadow style
- Nighttime Paris Shadows — This set includes the Eiffel Tower, several parisian characters and more.
McKinley got the Castle Shadows set. While it is fairy tale themed and includes a princess, this set is by no means gender specific. The set also include a dragon, a witch, and a knight. My photos don’t capture the awesomeness of the shadows that this set makes. There’s definitely a technique to it but it’s fun for the kids to figure out how to make the shadows larger or smaller, more blurred or defined.
My kids are ages 3, 5 and 6 and tend to be pretty rough with their toys. We’ve had this set for a few weeks and it’s held up well. Since its laser cut paper attached to wooden dowels, I didn’t expect them to be very sturdy however the paper is thick and seems to have some type of a coating on it. The dowels are only taped on but it has a really firm hold and we haven’t had any problems with them whatsoever. My kids are very much into tech gadgets so it’s always refreshing when the find a toy that sparks their interest and engages their creativity. I highly recommend these shadow puppet sets!
Now turn out the lights, cozy up and prepare for the show! Storytelling will never be the same again! The Les Petit Merveilles Shadow Puppet sets sell for around $20 each.
