Green Virgin Products Liquid Soap Nuts
Soap Nuts are the fruit of the Chinese Soap Berry trees. Harvested then dried in the sun they can be used as laundry detergent. The shells contain a natural soap called saponin. It’s great for those with allergies because it’s non toxic, natural and organic. Until recently, I thought they were always used in their whole form for laundry soap. Green Virgin Products offers Soap Nuts liquid which is much more user friendly in my opinion.
Saponin is extracted from the Soap Nuts with a process using only water and high tech filters. The solids and tannins are removed and it is deodorized. Without a preservative, Soap Nuts liquid has only a two week shelf life. Unfortunately preservatives can be toxic but because of Green Virgin Product’s commitment to non-toxic products, it became their mission to find a way to preserve it without the toxins. They use caprylyl glycol and phenethyl alcohol which extends the shelf life to at least 2 years. The Skin Deep Database rates these ingredients a 0 and a 1 which is about as non-toxic as you can get!
I was very intrigued with this product, yet, admittedly skeptical. It comes in a convenient pump bottle. Just two pumps of liquid is needed for an entire load of laundry in an HE washer (3 pumps for a top loader). How could that possibly clean my clothes? I tried it first on a load of towels. I was pretty impressed. The towels came out clean and fresh (no odors!) and I didn’t need a fabric softener, another bonus of using Soap Nuts liquid.
Next I tried it on a load of clothes from our 5 day camping trip. Needless to say, this was a pretty dirty load. Like magic, everything came out clean. I’m now a believer in Soap Nuts and thankful for Green Virgin Products for making it into a non-toxic liquid form that is easy to use!
