I will admit, I’m really not in shape. I rarely exercise and it’s starting to catch up to me as I get older. I have a lot less energy and I know I need to do something about it! Luckily, in the summer it’s not as hard to find ways to be active that don’t feel like a chore. With kids, it’s even easier! Here are a few ways to squeeze some fitness into your day:
- Adopt a competitive spirit — Challenge your kids at every opportunity during day to day activities such as “Race you to the mailbox!” or “First one to X wins!”
- Set up an obstacle course — On the weekend or when you have more time, set up a fun obstacle course for the family. You can pick up some inexpensive cones at Walmart and use sports equipment or other items you have on hand.
- Get inspired — Go to a live sporting event. Even though you’ll probably be sitting during most of the game, chances are there’s a long walk from the car plus quite a few stairs depending on where your seats are. You’ll get some exercise in jumping up and down cheering the team on, plus might get inspired to play more at home!
- Head to the beach — There’s nothing like clean air and sand under your feet to make you feel more alive! Bring a football or a frisbee and just PLAY!
Shaping up isn’t all just about fitness. Nutrition definitely plays a roll and making smart choice to fuel your body is important. I like Balance Bars because they taste good but just as importantly, they’re loaded with protein, vitamins and minerals. I’m not very good about planning ahead and tend to get light headed and grumpy on an empty stomach. Balance Bars make it easy to stay fueled, sustain hunger and increase energy. The Peanut Butter and Cookie Dough flavors are my favorite. Balance bars are also a great source of antioxidants (vitamin A, C and E). At around 210 calories each and loaded with protein, they’re perfect for that late afternoon snack to get you through until dinner or for a mid-morning boost. You can find them at Walmart near the vitamins and wellness products.
