Today’s Tip from The Green Year: 365 Small Things You Can Do to Make a Big Difference: Test Your Home for Radon
“Radon is a radioactive gas that is created when the uranium in soil and water breaks down and is released into the air. It can seep into your home through cracks in the walls and floors, gaps around pipes, and construction joints. Radon levels can be especially high during the winter months when your windows and doors are closed.
Radon test kits are available at home improvement stores for around $20. If radon levels in your home are too high (the EPA considers radon levels of more than 4 picoCuries per liter unacceptable) there are kits to help you reduce the radon level in your home by up to 99 percent. You can learn more about radon testing at www.epa.gov/iaq/radon”
