Building toys are timeless classics whether they are blocks, Lincoln Logs, Tinkertoys or something a little more modern like Superstructs. Superstructs are rod and connector style construction toys made of brightly colored and strong plastic. As winners of several awards including the Fall 2010 Parents’ Choice Recommended Award and two awards from Dr. Toy: 100 Best Children’s Products and 10 Best Creative Products for 2010, Superstructs will not disappoint. Prices start as low as $9.99 per building kit which comes with all of the pieces needed to make a single item, along with easy to “read” step-by-step pictorial directions. Of course there is always the option to explore creatively and construct something other than the set project.
Superstructs has made their sets even cooler by allowing you to customize them. To build a custom kit, visit www.superstrucs.com/customkit.php. Choose up to three sets in any combination, then personalize your gift box. You can select the occasion (birthday, Christmas, etc.) then pick a background and add a name.
For my review I selected the dune buggy, dragster and race car by dragging the picture of each one of them and dropping it into my kit. Then I chose a Christmas theme and added my son’s name. All of this was a very simple and quick process and I was able to preview it before ordering.
I was a little surprised when I received the kit and it was actually in TWO customized boxes. I think it depends on the size of each individual kit you order. The three kits I picked for my customized set didn’t fit into a single box. The box was a neat touch though, making a cool toy into a special gift. The following are the sets available for the customized kit:
Motorcycle • $9.95 • 33 pieces; Jet • $9.95 • 32 pieces; Race Car • $14.95 • 57 pieces; Dune Buggy • $17.95 • 53 pieces; Forklift • $25.95 • 110 pieces; Dragster • $24.95 • 89 pieces; Boom Truck & Crane • $25.95 • 108 pieces; Funny Car • $12.95 • 44 pieces
I like to have special projects for my son and I to do together while his sisters nap. Testing out the Superstructs was a fun project for both of us. Jackson and I built the race car together. He’s on the young end (3 yrs) of the recommended age for Superstructs so he definitely needed help. I told him which pieces we needed for each step and had him help me put them where they belonged. The instructions were really easy to follow and I actually enjoyed the building process and so did Jackson! I let him play with the pieces on his own too but mostly he just wanted to play with the driver and his helmet.
Superstructs is offering Mommies with Cents readers a special discount for the holidays. Use coupon code KQPPB5PB to take 50% off of one of the company’s best selling kits, the BIG Builder, a 126-piece set for ages 4-11, normally $41.95. The code expires 1/31/2011.
