The best experience of giving a gift is a tough one for me. For me, I can’t really say that it is an experience with giving a gift, but it is more about the act that inspired the “gift.” My sister was having a rough time where she really wanted to come home. She lives in Vermont and we are in Indiana. My parents were torn because they wanted her to be home, but nobody really had the money for her and her family to fly home. My parents are always so generous with their gift giving. I figured if I gave up my Christmas gift that year, they could afford to fly her and her family home. All of this was transpiring while I was at work, so it was through e-mail. My dad had emailed back saying he was crying at work by my generosity. Many times the act of doing something is much more rewarding than an actual gift.
One of my other ideas for an awesome gift giving experience is to donate to charities in everyone’s names. My parents seem to have almost everything and are the hardest people to buy for. My goal next year is to take their money I would spend on a gift and donate in their name to St. Jude’s or Susan G. Komen (may have to choose both). My grandma passed away from cancer and my paternal grandfather currently has cancer while stopping treatment a good while ago. So, it is something I am passionate about and it has effected our family greatly. I can’t think of a better gift.
What are some of your best gift giving experiences? We’d love to hear!
