The book Exploiting My Baby *Because it’s Exploiting Me A Memoir of Pregnancy & Childbirth by Teresa Strasser isn’t for everyone. If you are easily offended, this book probably isn’t for you. Teresa doesn’t hold back. She bares her true feelings about pregnancy, childbirth and motherhood uncensored. Personally, the book amused me. Having three children, I could relate to so much of it. Take the chapter titled “How Freaky and Paranoid is Your Google History?” for example. I remember with my first pregnancy how consumed I was by everything related to the development, health and safety of my unborn child. Teresa’s Google history included a long list of inquires that included: Imminent miscarriage (this one made the list quite a few times), Pregnancy and baby: Are hot baths safe?, Is it safe to take a hot bath while pregnant, Hot baths: safe during pregnancy?, caffeine during pregnancy, causes of Down syndrome, Ellen Pompeo pregnant, constipation pregnancy iron, People.com: Strasser expecting first baby and the list goes on and on. Yes, she Googled herself, tells a hilarious constipation/poop story that I won’t give away, had normal concerns during her first trimester (I think I Googled hot bath at least as many times as she did!) and had a sudden interest in celebrity pregnancies among other things.
Another chapter I totally related to is titled “Hey, Other Pregnant Ladies: Look My Way”. When you are pregnant you suddenly notice pregnant ladies everywhere and want to “talk shop” and compare notes. Teresa feels snubbed by other expecting mothers but admits it might all be in her head.
In this book Teresa writes about how her relationship with her own mother effects her. She talks openly about therapy, bodily functions, pregnancy sex and a whole lot more. She doesn’t hold back and covers just about every topic pertaining to pregnancy. I know a few friends who would find this book hilarious but I also know a couple who would find it offensive and not be amused at all. Proceed with caution if you think you lean more towards the conservative end of the spectrum. Personally, I found the book to be a quick, humorous and honest read and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
