There’s a lot of pressure in schools to improve district test scores. The responsibility falls to the teachers to work harder at preparing their students not only by teaching them the materials they need to know but by having them practice their test taking skills. For many kids, this is the hardest part. As parents, we can help out our over worked teachers as well as our kids by being more involved in their education. Quiz your child on their spelling words while you are making dinner. Ask them to solve math problems you throw at them while you are driving them to soccer practice. Make it a little silly to keep them engaged. For example, “If you had 2 Yoda figurines and 4 Storm Troopers but you lost one, how many Star Wars figures do you have?”
My kids are preschool age and younger but I try to help them with their memorization skills by asking them to help me remember a short grocery shopping list. I have my 4 year old son repeat the list back to me and ask him several times during our shopping trip what is left on the list. He’s gotten really good at remembering everything! Help your kids improve their learning efficiency by incorporating little skill tests into everyday tasks.
Do you have any fun games you use to help your children with their test taking skills? I’d love to hear them! As parents we should be supporting our child’s teachers in our student’s educational journey. I’m sure that your child’s teacher would be happy to share some ideas of their own!
