I loved craft projects as a kid. If there was an after school activity that involved crafts, I alway signed up. I remember doing crafts at home with my mom too. In fact, my grandmother still has a pair of beaded earrings that we made as Christmas gifts one year! Now that I have kids of my own I get to enjoy their delight in crafting too. They are still little so we keep it simple. Here are a few ideas:
- Picture Frames– Frames are always fun to make because we can actually use them afterwards. Craft foam is perfect for making refrigerator magnet frames. Wooden frame kits are also great too. Paint them if you’d like then embellish them with beads, feathers, pom-poms or anything else you can get to stick with some craft glue.
- Necklaces– Use yarn and some fruit loops for the always popular edible necklace. Large wooden beads or plastic beads with a large opening are also good for little hands. Stringing beads is good for practicing hand/eye coordination and kids always love the end result.
- Tambourines– Staple two paper or disposable plastic plates together all around the perimeter leaving a small opening. Add noodles, rice or beans between the two plates then staple closed. Decorate the outside with paint, markers, crayons etc.
- Free Play– Fill a box with all sorts of craft supplies like pipe cleaners, glitter, foam pieces, beads, popsicle sticks, toilet paper rolls, foil, old magazines etc. Let the kids use their creativity to come up with a craft of their own!
Factory Direct Craft is a good resource for supplies. They even have kits and books to help get you started! These are just a few fun and easy crafts for little ones. I’d love to hear what type of crafts you do with your kids. If you have any fun craft ideas, please share!
