According to the American Cancer Society, approximately 40,000 people die from breast cancer in the US each year. Globally, according to the World Conference on Breast Cancer, 400,000 people die annually from this disease. There are so many things you can do to support Breast Cancer Awareness and the search for a cure. Throughout the month we will be posting ways that you can contribute to help put an end to this disease.
The first step is prevention. Certain lifestyle factors can reduce the risk:
- Limit alcohol– there is a link between breast cancer and alcohol though it has not been determined how strong. Eliminate or limit alcohol consumption to one drink per day
- Maintain a healthy weight– there is a clear link between breast cancer and obesity- especially after menopause. Experts believe that estrogen production in fatty tissue may be the link between obesity and breast cancer risk.
- Stay physically active– this goes hand and hand with maintaining a healthy weight and is important for general over all health.
- Consider limiting fat in your diet- It is recommended to limit fat intake to less than 35 percent of your daily calories and restrict foods high in saturated fat.
Monthly breast exams are important for early detection. There is a detailed step by step guide here that also shows you exactly what to look for. Set up a monthly reminder to be emailed to you here. It only takes a minute and could save your life.
