I’m always trying to find ways to sneak some extra nutrition into my family’s diet, not just for the kids but for my husband and I too. We could all stand to eat a little healthier. One of my favorite ways to do this is with smoothies. I can sneak in veggies like spinach along with delicious and sweet fruit. I’ve also discovered Salba Chia. Grown in Peru under strictly controlled conditions in fertile soil, Salba is sowed without any chemical treatment or application of pesticides prior to, or post-harvest. Salba is packed full of vitamins, minerals, fiber and essential fatty acids. Due to it’s low flavor, it’s a perfect additive to almost any food to give it a nutritious boost. Add a tablespoon sprinkled on your cereal, stirred into your yogurt or blended into a smoothie. It can also be baked into your favorite recipe. Salba is available as a whole grain or ground, as well as in products such as Salba Smart Tortilla Chips and Salba Salsa. Salba is perfect for vegetarians, gluten free and other specialty diets.
I love using Salba Smart in smoothies. I doesn’t change the flavor at all. I prefer the whole seed Salba texture over the ground for smoothies. Whole and ground can both easily be added to many foods completely undetected. Check out these stats on Salba:
- 30% more antioxidants than blueberries
- 70% more vegetable protein than soybeans
- 2 x more potassium than bananas
- 6 x more calcium than whole milk
- 8 x more omega 3 fatty acids than salmon
- 25% more fiber than flax seed
- 15 x more magnesium than broccoli
- 6 x more iron than kidney beans
- 5 x more folate than spinach
Best of all, Salba costs just $0.54 per serving! Healthy? Check. Affordable? Check. Edible? Check. In fact, it’s so versatile, using it to get important nutrients is effortless!
Here’s and example of how you can use Salba:
Salba Smoothie
1 cup Water
1 cup Apple juice
1 cup Frozen blueberries
1 cup frozen mixed fruit
2 tbsp Salba Whole Grain*
Place all ingredients into a blender adding Salba Whole Grain last. Blend until texture is smooth. Blending time is approximately 2 minutes or until the ingredients achieve the consistency of your preference.
*4 tbsp Salba Premium Ground Grain can be substituted
In addition to Salba grains, they also offer products like tortilla chips and salsa. The tortilla chips are my favorite. They have a bit of a nutty, toasted sesame flavor that I love. The salsa is pretty good too!
