My first born got his first sunburn at six weeks old even though I was very conscious about protecting him. We had gone on a boating trip when out of town family came for a visit. Jackson wore an infant sized life jacket and was kept in the shade the entire time due to the fact that his pediatrician told me he was too young to wear sunscreen (it’s not recommended for babies under 6 months of age). It wasn’t until we were back home later that evening that the sunburn appeared on his face. I’m not entirely sure how it happened, whether it was the sun reflecting off the water or if the sun somehow penetrated the canvas shade on the boat but from that day forward I’ve been extremely cautious, especially since two of my children have red hair and very fair skin.
My kids know that they aren’t allowed outside to play unless they have sunscreen on, even on cloudy days. Unfortunately, my daughter and sunscreen aren’t the best of friends. Sometimes it gives her a rash or stings her skin. Because of this, we try to keep her physically covered as best as possible to limit the amount of exposed skin. Luckily their are clothing and swim products that have SPF built right in. www.konfidence.co.uk has a great selection of swim products and sun protection including UV suits, tees and hats that are perfect for those who need extra protection.
How do you protect your children from the sun?
