Ok, I’m going to be completely honest here. I really, really, really dislike dinner time. My kids are 2, 4, and 6 and the pickiest eaters on the planet. Dinner time is often filled with whining and complaints (not to mention spilled milk, potty breaks and plenty of opportunities to teach good table manners). Cooking isn’t a hobby of mind (I much prefer baking) so I keep things pretty simple and what I feel is kid-friendly. I was a picky kid once too so I can relate.
Just the other day when we were at the grocery store my 6 year old son asked for fish sticks. Other than fish sticks we don’t really eat fish in our family. In fact, it has been quite some time since we’d had them so I was surprised and please when he asked for some! The timing couldn’t have been better either since I had just been asked to review Gorton’s.
Gortons.com has a bunch of recipes you can use with their products. I was intrigued with their idea of Fish Sticks in a Blanket — what kid could turn those down? I had high hopes so we gave the recipe a whirl. First, the recipe couldn’t get much easier. Secondly, dough and cheese makes everything better — bonus!
Here’s the recipe if you want to get it a try:
INGREDIENTS:
DIRECTIONS:
1. Preheat oven to 375°F and unroll dough separating the 16 strips.
2. Wrap cheese half and one strip of dough around each Gorton’s Classic Breaded Fish Sticks, bake 20 minutes (only took 10 minutes in my oven so be sure to watch closely to avoid burning!), let sit for 2-3 minutes and serve immediately.
2 out of 3 children approved. My oldest gave it 2 thumbs up and ate FOUR, yes FOUR Fish Sticks in a Blanket! My youngest who NEVER eats anything for dinner finished most of one while my middle daughter decided to only eat her tarter sauce with a spoon and poke at the “blanket” with her finger.
As for the parents, we’re much more easily impressed. We both ate dinner with no complaints, and not just to set a good example! Fish Sticks in a Blanket will probably find it’s way into the dinner rotation. 4 out of 5 is a very rare occurrence and deserves recognition!
We’ve had Gorton’s Fish Sticks before, it fact, it’s the brand I personally prefer. The golden “crust” bakes up to the perfect crispness and the fish inside is mild flavored making it perfect for picky kids. If you haven’t tried Gorton’s products, be sure to grab a coupon and give them a try!
