As much as I wish I could take things in stride and stay calm as a parent, I’m naturally a stress-er. I wonder how some moms handle it as they make everything seem so effortless. My oldest daughter hasn’t been feeling well all week so I took her to the walk-in clinic this morning. My son was at school but my 3 year old was home with me as usual so the three of us arrived at the doctor’s office and were met with a 30 minute wait. During that time I worried about the baby sitting across from us that was smiley and happy. My girls took notice of him immediately and starting asking his mommy questions. I had to keep them reined in so as not to let them get too close to him and cough on him. Then a woman came in and took the seat next to us. She had a hairbrush in each hand and a very large noticeable bald spot in middle of her head. It was immediately apparent why as she starting twirling the brush through her hair over and over again. My girls are very inquisitive and not so subtle or quiet so I immediately panicked and did everything I could to keep them distracted to avoid an uncomfortable situation.
Finally we were called back to give a urine sample but after two failed attempts while my other daughter touched every.single.thing and a good hand scrubbing later we were headed back to the waiting room. A nice gentleman smiled at us and complimented us on our matching Seahawks jerseys. My oldest cheerfully (and loudly noted his missing tooth. He was very good natured about it as she hadn’t said anything rude, just enough to embarrass me. As we took our seats across the room I whispered a reminder in her ear that we aren’t to make comments about other people’s looks. And this was just the beginning of our 2.5 hour trip to the doctor. Yes, I was stressed. And stress stinks.

I’m working on ways I can handle stress better. Today, these were the things I did to try to relieve some of it:
- I texted a friend who always has my back and provides comic relief. She told me I was doing a great job and that the place I can find some patience is a pajama weekend.
- I kept my purse stocked with distractions: 2 mini games, sticker activity booklets and my iPad.
- Taking deep breaths and reminding myself that my kids are great and that I will get through this
Looking back after being removed from our little experience it’s easy for me to see how normal and well behaved my girls were. In the moment though it felt like I didn’t have enough control of any of the situations. That’s life though and in retrospect I think we handled things pretty well. I’ve got a lot of work to do in this area of motherhood. I know I need to relax a little and go with the flow while giving my littles the space they need to learn and grow. Parenting is HARD though! And moms have a tendency to be hard on themselves. It’s important that we not only give our children grace, but ourselves as well.
How do you handle stressful situations? Do you have any tips for me? I’d love to hear them!
