Every year for Easter when I was a little girl, I’d get a new package of silly putty. It came in a red plastic egg. It started out flesh colored but after my dad showed me how it could copy newspaper it would started to turn grey with the ink. It was the perfect amount to roll up into a bouncy ball and I loved to stretch and fold it to make bubbles in it to snap. Crazy Aaron’s Thinking Putty takes plain old silly putty to a whole other level. I thought Silly Putty was great back then but Crazy Aaron’s Thinking Putty blows it out of the water. To start, there are so many intriguing varieties, you won’t be able to choose just one.
Crazy Aaron, aka Aaron Muderick was a web designer back in 1998. He convinced a few of his colleagues to purchase 100 lbs of Bouncing Putty from a chemical supplier so they’d have desk toys to play with during their downtime. After the dot com crash, Aaron did some research and created his own putty recipe and created quite a few varieties including Heat Sensitive coloring changing putty, Super Magnetic putty, tons of amazing colors and even a crystal clear version!
Today, Crazy Aaron’s Thinking Putty can be found in speciality toy stores, museum gift shops, arts and crafts stores and more. The full line is available online at www.puttyworld.com.
Crazy Aaron’s Super Illusion Thinking Putty is one of my favorites. Available in three unique colors (Super Oil Slick, Super Lava, and Super Scarab), this putty is mesmerizing. I could play with it for hours! It’s metallic and reminds me of molten lava. The color changes a bit when you stretch and pull it. This variety also has a special characteristic. It has a memory effect that shrinks the putty back after you pull it. Give it a few twists and pulls, then set it down on the table and watch as it moves back to it’s original shape. Super Illusion Thinking Putty comes in a large tin for $14.
When I saw Crazy Aarons Thinking Putty in a “Creatures” version that comes with 2 plastic eyeballs I knew I had to have it. I love keeping small games and activities in my purse to pull out for my kids while we are waiting in lines or at a restaurant waiting for a meal. This one comes in a smaller tin and reminds me a little more of original Silly Putty with its texture, though it does have something in it that makes it speckled. It glows in the dark too! It’s available in green, orange, blue or pink and sells for $12. There’s a great YouTube video that shows many different ways to build creatures if you need a little inspiration!
I split the larger tin’s putty in half and let my three kids try out this putty today. It kept them busy far longer than I imagined it would. I was amused with their creativity with it too! My daughters pulled bits off and smashed them onto their fingernails to make fingernail polish! Then there’s the difference between boys and girls:
My daughter made a necklace.
My son made handcuffs.
