Learning to ride a bike doesn’t always come easy. I remember being terrified of tipping over with my wobbly training wheels. When I was a kid there was no such thing as a balance bike. I love the concept and believe it gives kids the confidence they need to transition easily to a big kid bike. They can progress at their own pace with a balance bike. The Strider Sport is a good option for starters. It’s designed for 18 months-5 year olds and the best thing about it is that it is easily adjustable without using any tools. Both the handle bars and seat height can be changed by using the quick release clamps.
The bike is easy to assemble. These are the only parts and it literally takes just a minute or two to put it together. It comes with two seats. One is a padded saddle with an extra long seat post to fit taller/older children. The other is a smaller all-weather mini-saddle for beginning riders and designed for their small hips. It allows for the correct riding position and posture.
One of the things I instantly took a liking to is the fact that the tires will never need air and will never go flat. Made from EVA polymer (industrial foam), the tires are super light and durable yet offer a smooth ride.
The bike features foot rests for the more advanced riders. Since this bike doesn’t have any pedals and is powered solely by foot work, once the child gains enough momentum and has good balance, they can put their feet up and glide. For beginners, their feet/legs act as their training wheels. They can catch themselves if they start tipping. My four year old daughter gave the bike a try:
Since she’s been riding a small bike with training wheels, it was a bit different for her but you can see from the smile on her face that she liked it. At first she just walked the bike along but after a little while she started getting the hang of it and was scooting around faster. Our driveway is on a pretty big slope but I don’t think it will be too long before she really gets the confidence to get going on the Strider!
The Strider Sport is available in 7 colors and retails for $119. You can find out more at www.striderbikes.com.
