I just got back from the Mamma Mia! show at Seattle’s Paramount theater. It was so much fun! The musical is based on the smash hit songs of ABBA. Who doesn’t love “Dancing Queen”?! The story line is really good too:
An independent, single mother who owns a small hotel on an idyllic Greek island, Donna is about to let go of Sophie, the spirited daughter she’s raised alone. For Sophie’s wedding, Donna has invited her two lifelong best girlfriends—practical and no-nonsense Rosie and wealthy, multi-divorcee Tanya – from her one-time backing band, Donna and the Dynamos. But Sophie has secretly invited three guests of her own.
On a quest to find the identity of her father to walk her down the aisle, she brings back three men from Donna’s past to the Mediterranean paradise they visited 20 years earlier. During 24 chaotic, magical hours, new love will bloom and old romances will be rekindled on this lush island full of possibilities.
Inspired by the storytelling magic of ABBA’s songs from “Dancing Queen” and “S.O.S.” to “Money, Money, Money” and “Take a Chance on Me,” MAMMA MIA! is a celebration of mothers and daughters, old friends and new family found.
The music was mostly upbeat and fun. You’ll likely recognize at least a few of the songs even if you aren’t very familiar with ABBA. You’ll be dancing in your seat as you’re immersed into the story.
The characters are animated and vibrant. Some of the costumes are over the top fun with brightly colored spandex and the dance moves to match. I always love the little details. In this show, one of the characters interacts with the orchestra leader. Things like this give the show an added dimension and make it even more entertaining.
Stick around at the end because you’ll get another round of some of your favorite songs from the show and some awesome dance performances!
Visiting the Paramount Theater for Seattle Theater Group is one of my favorite things to do. I’ve spent quality one on one time with my children and some of my closest friends attending these shows. It’s nice to have uninterrupted conversation in the car ride down there which makes traffic completely bearable. Then we get to enjoy an awesome show we’ll remember for years to come. It’s always a great experience and I highly recommend it!
