Mölkky Now Available at The Grommet #Giveaway

My 8 year old has really gotten into what he calls “backyard games” this summer. It all started with a game of Washer Toss on a camping trip. Now he wants to play whatever games he can get his hands on. The Grommet sent us a really fun outdoor throwing game called Mölkky. It’s an outdoor skittle game first created in Finland and the #1 selling outdoor game in Europe. I had never even heard of skittles so this was all new to me but we couldn’t wait to try it.

The goal is to get exactly 50 points by knocking down pins numbered one through 12. The scoring is simple, but also slyly strategic: knock down multiple pins and you get one point per pin. Knock down just one pin, though, and you get points equal to the pin’s number. Go over 50 and you get knocked down . . . back to 25 points.

After a player’s turn, the pins are reset in the spots where they land. The “board” is constantly changing and no two turns are the same.

The set is finely made with solid Birch hardwood playing pieces and housed in a pine box with natural fiber rope carrying handles. All of the game pieces are made of Finnish wood responsibly sourced from sustainable forests. No chemicals are used in production of the game. The Grommet’s description says it comes with instructions and a scorebook. Unless I somehow misplaced them, we didn’t receive directions. Luckily, the website even has a video on how the game is played so we weren’t left in the dark.

We love the strategic play of this game and I like that it helps with math skills! It’s a great way to sneak in some extra practice during the summer.
