My kids are 5, 6 and 8. They have several tablets and devices between them. They probably get more screen time than they should but they are also very active in sports and quite social. They play games together and do a lot of learning! We recently got a chance to try the new VTech InnoTab MAX. It is designed for kids ages 3 to 9 so it’s very fitting for my children.
The VTech InnoTab MAX features a dual-core CPU with up to 6 times faster processing than previous version. Kids don’t have much patience for slow loading times etc. so this is a good thing! The 7″ multi-touch screen is high resolution for a great picture. The built-in rechargeable battery makes it convenient to be ready to play at all times. You won’t have to hunt down new batteries all the time!
One of the new features of the InnoTab MAX is VTech Kid Connect. Parents download an app to their phone and kids can send them voice and text messages, photos, drawings and fun stickers in real time. I think this is really great for younger kids because you can select from pre-designed phrases but you can’t text your own. The way around this is by drawing/writing a picture to send. I like my kids to be able to send their own messages. This is a really cute and fun feature but kids can go a little overboard with it sending non stop messages which can get a little crazy after awhile.
The InnoTab comes with apps like My Magic Beanstalk, Movie Maker, Art Studio and Wonder Cam MAX. You also get to choose one free Toca Boca App and two additional apps which you can pick and download from the Learning Lodge. The Learning Lodge is a huge library of age appropriate app, books and learning games. I love how a lot of them feature my kid’s favorite characters like Minnie Mouse and Flipsies which make learning even more fun.
Many of the games have progressive learning content that adapts to a child’s skill level. If the child excels at the game it will ask if they want to try something more challenging. I think that’s a pretty cool feature and keeps kids advancing and learning new skills.
Initial set up of the InnoTab was really simple — just connecting it to wi-fi and choosing a few settings and it’s ready to play. The kid-safe Wi-Fi and Web Browser allows kids to explore online games, videos and websites that have been pre-selected by VTech while the Parental Controls allow parents to manage their child’s apps, web access and tablet time as well as follow their child’s learning development.
InnoTab MAX comes in pink or blue and retails for $99. It has a flip and fold stand and tough cover to protect the tablet. The cover is also removable for a grown-up feel. Overall, this is a really great product. My girls are putting InnoTab games on their Christmas list. I love that because it makes it easy when relatives ask what to get them! My son is starting to get a little old for this type of product. While he enjoys many of the games, he feels like he’s outgrown the cartoons and stuff and would rather play something geared for older kids.
