The Fundamentals
Can’t spend $1000 on a clutch? Or $1500 on a dress? We totally get it. When it comes down to that new bag, paying the rent and putting food on the table takes precedence (there’s some things we’d forgo for our wardrobe, but dinner is definitely not one of them) Still, we want to look good.
If there’s ever a piece worth spending money on, it’s an essential. And by essential we mean: you can wear it with multiple outfits, it won’t show up this morning’s breakfast (not yours, the baby’s) and it won’t go out of style a couple of months later. Here are five of the best styles worth investing in.

Trench coat: When it comes to playing the game of cost-per-wear, the trench coat wins. Find the right one, and it’ll moonlight as several different coats (not literally unfortunately). But, it should metamorphose from work appropriate to evening out easily.

Ankle boots: Classic and often underrated, ankle boots are about as versatile as it gets. Dresses, jeans, pants – they all look better with a pair of ankle boots thrown into the mix. Think: black, with minimal detail and an easy-to-wear heel.
Black T-shirt: You can go for a round or V-neck, either way, a simple black T-shirt has you covered for any eventuality. It should be slightly loose fitting, and as high quality as you can comfortably afford. All it needs is a statement necklace and blazer to take it from morning school run to dance-the-night-away-ing.
Cashmere sweater: When it comes to subtle styling and making yourself appear put-together, the cashmere sweater is your (best) friend. It doesn’t have to cost the earth; there are some great super-soft versions on both ends of the scale. Pick one in a neutral shade and you can’t go wrong.
