I remember seeing an infomercial years ago about Blendy Pens and thinking how cool they looked. Chameleon Kidz has brought back this product from 2005 and I had the opportunity not only to introduce it to my kids but check it out in person for the first time with them!
There are several sets available to choose from. We received the Jumbo set with 24 Blendy Pens, 10 posters, 2 stencils, 1 art portfolio and a Blendy airbrush. This set can be played with right out of the box with very minimal instruction. My girls got busy right away coloring their favorite posters.
I showed the girls how to get the “blendy” technique to work. Two pens are connected together with a shared cap in the middle. If you twist the top and bottom in opposite directions, the tips meet in the middle. Hold the pen vertically and the top color will mix into the tip of the bottom marker. When you color with it, it fades from the top color into the marker’s original color. Using this technique, you can make 276 color combinations!
The girls were fascinated with the posters. When you color on them, shapes and designs sometimes appear. Sprinkles in the ice cream for example! My youngest daughter realized very quickly that she could make some really cool effects using the airbrush tool. You just insert your marker into the tool and blow into the top while holding it over the area you’d like to color. It makes a sort of spray paint effect.
I tried it with the included stencils and it worked very well! Parker was able to get a really cool ombre effect on the mermaid’s hair on one of her posters. I love how simple the concepts are but how elaborate you can get with them!
My girls had a blast trying out Blendy Pens and they are likely something will we replace when they get worn out because they are so much fun! One of my favorite things about this set is the cardboard portfolio for storing the pens, posters and stencils. It has a design on it that you can color and elastic bands that hold it closed keeping your supplies secure. The jumbo set is just $24.99. I think that is a pretty good value for an ingenious product! It would make an excellent holiday gift, even with the smaller sized sets: Large Kit $19.99 (20 markers), Small Kit $9.99 (8 markers) and Stationery Set $5.99 (6 markers).
Kids as young as four years old can color with depth and dimension, shadows, highlights and shading. The results are stunning! And did I mention the ink is washable? You can find out more about these awesome pens at www.chameleonkidz.com and see them in action on their YouTube Channel.
