My daughters love crafting in the kitchen. My oldest daughter especially enjoys edible projects that are visibly pleasing. Gramma in a Box is a subscription service for kids. If I had to go out and gather the supplies for projects like this it would take a lot of time and probably cost a lot more too. I love how each box has a theme (this month’s is Halloween themed) and is neatly packaged with everything needed to complete all three projects.The only extra supplies you might need are things you most likely already have such as a spoon, knife, toothpicks, microwave safe bowl and paper plates. It comes with step by step directions for each project including tips from Gramma Terry. Here’s what we made with this month’s box:
Project #1 was Oreo spiders. It helps to do the projects in order because some projects use supplies leftover from the previous project. For this project, you take the Oreos apart, add pretzel sticks for legs, then reassemble the cookie using a bit a melting chocolate. After this is complete, add the candy eyes using a tiny bit of melting chocolate. We used a toothpick for this part and it worked well. The pretzel sticks for this project were pre-cut to size which was really convenient!
Project #2 uses the melting chocolate from project #1. You may have to reheat it a little to make it a good spreadable consistency. Spread it out on the parchment paper until it’s about the size and shape of a dollar bill. Then add candy worms, candy bones, and if you’d like, leftover candy eyes.
The third project was cookie decorating. This is always my girls favorite part. This month they got to decorate candy corn, pumpkin and ghost shaped cookies with orange, white and yellow frosting. The frosting comes in adorable little frosting bags. You just snip off the end when you’re ready to use them. It’s the perfect amount for the cookies included. There’s plenty, with some left over most of the time but not a huge amount for the kids to go crazy with.
Occasionally my son will get in on the crafting but prefers to contribute by eating the finished projects. There’s enough for all three of them to share and sometimes mom and dad do a little sampling too. Even though my girls have received several shipments of Gramma in a Box, they don’t tire of them. They are always excited to see what the new theme will be, what shape the cookies are and what color the frosting is. They look forward to Gramma in a Box and so do I! The projects are fun and easy and the clean up is minimal. For the most part, they can do these projects completely on their own if I don’t have time to help but it’s also fun for mother/daughter time when I do!
