Do you know what it costs for a family of five to go out to a movie? “An arm and a leg” my husband would say. It really is crazy how much something as simple as a movie night at the theater can cost. As a family we are always looking for ways to save money and since the entertainment category in the budget isn’t a necessity, it’s the first to get cut. Luckily, there are lots of affordable ways we can still have fun together. Staying in and having a game night can be as low as FREE if you already have some games to play! If you have some wiggle room, adding some pizza, popcorn, candy and soda always ups the fun factor. Don’t have a game collection yet or want to try something new? Goliath Games has some wonderful, affordable family board games that will provide hours and hours of fun!
Save money on family entertainment with a one-time purchase that encourages spending time together enjoying each other’s company. Here are a few options:
Mastermind is the world’s most popular code-breaking strategy game. Designed for two players, family members take turns being the Codemaker and Codebreaker. The Codemaker sets a secret code, then the Codebreaker must attempt to match the code using logic, deduction and a little bit of luck. For 2 players, ages 8 and up.
The video above is an in depth look at how the game is played. It’s a pretty simple yet fun game that involves some strategic thinking but even younger players can play and try out their guess work. I love that all the pieces can be stored right inside the game. Since the game is played in rounds, it can be as long or as short as you’d like so games can still be fit into busy schedules! My son especially loves this game as he loves puzzles and trying to figure things out.
Rummikub has been enjoyed by millions of families around the globe and is a timeless tool for reinforcing math and strategy skills. Players take turns placing numbered tiles in runs and groups, rummy style. The first player to get rid of all their tiles wins. For 2-4 players, ages 8 and up. This game was a family favorite as a child. I can’t wait to add it to our collection and introduce my kids to it!
Tri-Ominos adds a whole new dimension to the classic game of dominoes. Players must score points by matching numbers on the three-sided pieces, earning bonus points for special moves like matching all three sides. This fast-moving game is full of strategy, math and fun for the whole family. For 2-4 players, ages 8 and up. This is another game I remember playing as a kid. It’s easy to learn so there’s no frustration. It’s also going on my shopping list!
Sequence is the game of strategy and luck. Play a card from your hand and place a chip on a corresponding space on the game board. When you have five in a row, it’s a sequence. Look out for the Jacks – they’re wild! For 2-12 players, ages 7 and up. I like this game because it can be played with just two people or a whole crowd of people! Plus, it has wild cards which are always a lot of fun.
Now you can stop spending money on expensive family activities and spend some quality time together with family game nights! Which game is your favorite? Did you play any of these as a kid? Check out the collection at Walmart, Target, Amazon and other retailers.
