Parenting isn’t easy. We learn and evolve as we go. Sleep tends to be an issue right from the get-go. Should you co-sleep? Pacifier or no pacifier? To swaddle or not to swaddle. Those early days might be tough but it doesn’t stop there. You’ll have to transition from crib to bed, decide on a nap schedule and bedtimes that work best for your toddler, cope with the bedtime fears (darkness, monsters etc.) of your preschooler and so much more. Even as they get older bedtime can be rough. It can be hard to settle down after a busy day. Having a routine can help but even as an adult, it can be difficult to turn off your brain and get to sleep when you want to. My kids and I have found that guided meditations can be really helpful. You can find apps that are great but as a general rule, we don’t allow devices in our kid’s bedrooms. It’s just too tempting to use them for other things. The Z Button is a good alternative.
What is a Z Button?
A Z Button is a battery operated button that plays a calming sleep meditation to help lull you to sleep. There’s no screen and no light so there’s no distraction. Just a soothing voice to help you bring a peaceful close to your day. There’s a switch on the bottom to activate and deactivate the button. When you’re ready for bed, just push the button to start the meditation. You can press it again to stop it. You can also adjust the volume by pressing and holding the button until it changes. There are 4 volume settings: Blast Your Eardrums, Medium, Softer and Almost Whisper (as humorously named in the included info sheet) .
A calming female voice leads this sleep meditation which was specifically designed for children ages 3-10. Soothing music plays softly in the background. The voice helps kids relax the entire body and focus on unwinding. It plays for 15 minutes but don’t be surprised if your kid konks out before that. It’s pretty darn effective.
My kids were already familiar with sleep meditations because we’ve used them before when trying to fall asleep in hotels when we travel for sports. There’s an extra challenge when it comes to an entire family sleeping in the same room! For the most part, my kids don’t have any trouble going to sleep in their own beds at home but occasionally they’ll get restless and have a hard time settling in. Z Button to the rescue with an assist! It truly works. In fact, my girls have actually been fighting over it (I need to order a second one obviously!)
If you haven’t tried sleep meditations with your kids, I highly recommend them. I’m also quite fond of the Z Button — I love that kids can easily operate it on their own so they feel in control. I also love that it eliminates having to use an electronic device. There’s no distracting screen and you don’t have to recharge it. The batteries will last a long time, especially if you remember to deactivate the button with the switch on the bottom after your child has fallen asleep.
I’m hoping that in the future, the button will have several meditations to choose from or that different buttons will be available just to switch things up a little. You can find out more about the Z Button and order your own on Amazon for only $29.99 with free shipping. Get one for a stress-free bedtime!
