When I was a little girl my grandma kept her fancy perfumes on a mirrored tray on her dresser. I was always intrigued by them and wondered what special occasions she was saving them for. As an adult, I am still intrigued by perfumes, especially the high end ones from France. I recently had the opportunity to sample the Discovery Collection from Robert Piguet. This is the perfect sampler if you are trying to decide on a favorite before purchasing a full sized bottle.
The Discovery Set contains five of Robert Piguet’s most enticing scents presented in 2.5 ml spray samplers. They come in a classy black on black pull-out coffret. If you are like me and wanting to dip your toes into the incredible world of a niche fragrance brand legend, this will definitely open up your senses and introduce you five fragrances including Fracas, Casbah, V (formerly Visa), Oud Délice and Notes.
I can’t even begin to describe them as elegantly as the brand so I am including their descriptions below, along with my thoughts on each one.
V de Robert Piguet
(Formerly known as “Visa”)
V de Robert Piguet opens with an initial exotic sweetness of ylang-ylang that embraces luscious bergamot and pear. Sumptuous layers of rose, white peach and cinnamon unfold in the warm heart, hinting at the scent’s sultry demeanor. In an unforgettable finale, the juxtaposition of milky sandalwood and gourmand leather evokes a tempting delicacy.
Faithful to Robert Piguet’s original concept, but with a few new charms of its own, V de Robert Piguet is exciting and seductive like an unexpected romantic journey.
This is the sweetest scent of the five in my opinion and in my top 3. I love the different layers and how the fragrance changes as you wear it. It’s quite lovely!
Oud delice
An olfactory confit of irresistible ingredients, Oud Délice de Robert Piguet is like hunger in a bottle. This epicurean dream immediately captures the fragrance aficionado, seducing with mystifying deliciousness. In a single veil the wearer becomes an object of craving and those around them, their ravenous admirers.
From its bright beginning, Oud Délice creates a mouthwatering effect with caramelized amber, miel de Provence and fig. The luscious palette then lingers into oud Piguet a proprietary blend of resins and woods. Indonesian patchouli and Haitian vetiver lay a warm path to the scent’s foundation — an exotic recipe for yearning.
Oud Délice: A fragrant ambrosia.
This one has a smokey quality that is alluring and sexy but it has a sweet side as well. It is one of my favorites.
Casbah — old trunk
Robert Piguet Parfums creation Casbah is the suggestion of a mysterious and fragrant journey amidst the souks of Marrakech. Bringing a notably exotic element to the family of Piguet scents, Casbah’s followers become immediately engaged and committed to the fragrance’s allure.
Intriguing yet elegant, Casbah has plenty of secrets and surprises. The warm whispers of black pepper and nutmeg introduce the delicate green melody of angelica root. The effervescent opening then softens into a heart of iris embraced by tobacco leaves. Cedarwood provides a polished backdrop for the intricate, smoky floral accord, while incense intertwined with salty vetiver delivers a smooth, silky finale.
Enchanting and mesmerizing, Casbah weaves a tapestry of mystery.
This one was easily my least favorite though it did invoke a sensory response. To me it has an antique vibe that is just too outdated for my personal taste.
fracas
The coveted jewel in the crown of Piguet’s glittering collection, 1948 game-changer Fracas, is a long-time trendsetter. Here, legendary perfumer, Germaine Cellier, sought to create a scent that would make its wearer feel like a bombshell; one that would leave an unsettling effect on everyone that encountered it.
With unmistakable and unrivaled opulent tuberose and jasmine accords, this lush and creamy concoction clings to a woman’s skin and warms with her unique chemistry. Unlike many traditional white florals, Fracas is dark and luscious. Rich accents of sandalwood and delicate musk enhance the brilliance and complexity.
If you like floral scents and gardenia in particular, you’ll love this fragrance. Personally, Gardenia is too strong of a floral for me but I do love how the sandalwood and musk tones it down and blends it out. A very pretty floral fragrance.
Notes
As with music, a great perfume is more than the sum of its notes. Notes de Robert Piguet is a tribute to some of the most exquisite materials in the perfumer’s palette, a fragrance of exceptional harmony and beauty.
The high-pitched prelude of bergamot and clary sage sets the stage for the gentle aria of orange flower and geranium. The exhilarating start leads to the sonorous timbre of oakmoss and tonka bean. The dark tones of costus further deepen the composition, while the green clarity of vetiver lends it an elegant counterpoint. Warm and luxurious, Notes de Robert Piguet is a symphony of sensations.
Notes de Robert Piguet — unique, memorable, and elegant.
This one is my jam. It’s more of a fresh scent than the others and to me has a warm, comforting feeling, like clean laundry only with a luxurious vibe like an expensive clothing boutique. This one feels more unisex to me which I love.
It’s so hard to grasp what a perfume smells like with just a worded description. That’s why I love this sampler. Some of the scents I thought would be my favorite based on the description weren’t quite what I was expecting while others completely took my by surprise. This is a great set with a wonderful variety of fragrances. It’s fun to experiment with them and see how they react with your own body chemistry. A little goes a long way so even these little bottles will give you enough to wear on multiple occasions to help you form a solid opinion. Once you find your favorite, indulge yourself with a full sized bottle!
