It is recommended that children over the age of two visit a dentist regularly. Our dental plan and dentist told us it wasn’t necessary until age three. But what about before then? Developing teeth are susceptible to tooth decay and cavities. In fact, the Center for Disease Control has stated that tooth decay is the most common chronic disease of children in America- five times more common than asthma! It is important to start a daily cleaning routine, even before teeth have broken the surface, to help maintain proper oral health.
Dr. Ray Wagner, a pediatrician, realized that babies regularly see a doctor long before they are ever introduced to a dentist. He created Spiffies, a baby tooth wipe containing Xylitol which is a natural ingredient that prevents cavities. Spiffies tooth wipes come in three fruit flavors- grape, mango and apple and are individually wrapped for convenience. A study by the University of California at San Francisco’s School of Dentistry recently concluded that Xylitol wipes like Spiffies were extremely effective in reducing and preventing cavities. Their findings were released at the May 2010 annual session of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry.
Spiffies are recommended for children age 3 months to 3 years of age. They can be purchased at select retail outlets or online at www.spiffies.com and drugstore.com A box of 20 Spiffies Wipes retails for around $5.50. A Spiffies New Baby Gift Box retails for $20 and comes packaged in a white glossy box wrapped with a silver bow and contains 30 Spiffies Toothwipes – 10 in each flavor. It is ready to ship in blue for a little boy, pink and green for a little girl, or yellow for either.
We were given the opportunity to test Spiffies out on my 1 1/2 year old and 3 year old whose brushing routine already consisted of wiping. While we make sure to brush their teeth each night before bed with training toothpaste and a toothbrush, I have been wiping their teeth with a wash cloth during morning baths and after snacks for quite some time. Having a flavored wipe was a treat for them and I loved knowing that each wipe contained a cavity fighting ingredient that my wash cloths obviously do not! I also loved that the tooth wipes are so easy to just toss in the diaper bag and have on hand whenever they might be needed. Several times we went on weekend trips and I didn’t have to worry about remembering to pack their toothbrushes. The convenience of Spiffies alone, made them a winner in my book!
