I, admittedly, do not enjoy reading very much unless it is something that really catches my interest. A Time to Heal by Barbara Cameron is a book that definitely kept me interested. I don’t have much time to read with 3 children, so I took the opportunity to enjoy the book while I was on vacation last week.
With my husband in the military, I was able to relate to Chris Matlock as he was an ex-soldier trying to bury his past while creating a new future with new opportunities. Having met Jenny Bontrager in a VA hospital years before, he remembered how beautiful she described where she lived. So, he set out to see what her world was like. Having arrived without notice, Chris quickly realized Jenny was married to Matthew. This is only after meeting Matthew’s sister, Hannah, after catching her from falling in a barn.
A Time to Heal keeps the reader entertained by letting the reader question if Chris had different motives than just trying to find a nice place to live. Matthew initially believed he was after Jenny. Soon, Chris gained Matthew’s trust and realized he had good intentions. As the story unfolds, Chris’ past starts to catch up with him as Malcolm Kraft (a man trying to get revenge on Chris) threatens Chris and Hannah.
All-in-all, A Time to Heal was a good read, but I felt the ending was lacking something. It was almost as if Malcolm was thrown in at the last minute and was such a small portion of the book. Chris’ past was probably really entertaining and a good read as he would have many stories to tell from being an ex-soldier. I would have liked to read more on this.
I did like that the book included a glossary as the Amish have some of their own slang terms that can make it hard for the reader to understand. I am also anxious to try the recipes in the back- especially the cinnamon rolls! It also has a section in the book giving a clue of the next book in the Quilts of Lancaster County series. Let’s just say it involves a baby and I have to say I look forward to reading the next installment. Purchase the book for less than $10 on Amazon right now too!
